Development of Management Package for Fruit Borer in Jackfruit

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Development of management package for fruit borer in jackfruit were conducted at five jackfruit growing areas viz. Ramghar B-Baria, Norshingdhi, Gazipur and Tangail starting from January to June, 2011. Five treatments i) Mechanical control (Cleaning and destruction of borer larvae at first notice of infestation); ii) Spraying of Neem Seed Oil (NSO) @ 5ml + Trix @ 3ml per liter of water; iii) Spraying of Sobicron 425EC @ 2ml per liter of water; iv) Wrapping fruits with cloths just at fruit setting; and v) Untreated control were evaluated against jackfruit borer (Diaphania caesalis) (Walker). Among the five treatments evaluated, developing fruits wrapping with cloths received the lowest (3.99% and 6.51%) fruit infestation and offered the best protected (80.95% and 74.64%) in B-Baria and Gazipur, respectively followed by mechanical control (4.24% and 6.17%) fruit infestation and (79.76% and 75.96%) infestation reduction compared to untreated control (20.95% and 25.67%) infestation. Sobicron 425EC @ 2ml/l performed better (9.84% and 10.81%) than that of Neem seed oil @ 5ml/l (18.54% and 19.25%) in both the locations. From the results, it is revealed that developing jackfruit wrapping with cloth and mechanical control treatments showed the best performance in reducing borer infestation and proved promising. These two non-chemical treatments protected fruit borer infestation satisfactorily compared to other interventions evaluated in the study and could be suggested for the jackfruit farmers of Bangladesh.

Objectives:

To develop a management package for fruit borer in jack fruit.

Methodology:

The study was conducted during January 2011 to till date at the farmer’s orchards of five selected jackfruit growing areas. The areas were selected based on degree of infestation, earlier survey recommendations and DAE’s red-spots. The selected areas were Ramghar of Khagrachori hill district (Ramghar Sadar, Heako Bazar and Nurpur), B-Baria (Bishnupur, and Akhaura), Norshingdhi (Shibpur), Gazipur (Sripur and Kapashia), and Tangail (Modhupur and Mominpur). Five treatments were i) Mechanical control (Cleaning and destruction of borer larvae at first notice of infestation); ii) Spraying of Neem Seed Oil (NSO) @ 5ml + Trix @ 3ml per liter of water; iii) Spraying of Sobicron 425EC @ 2ml per liter of water; iv) Wrapping fruits with cloths just at fruit setting; and v) Untreated control. At least 10 trees representing 10 replications were taken under each treatment. The same treatment combinations were further replicated for other locations. In case of mechanical treatment, all 10 trees were monitored every alternate days and any infestation observed were investigate and kill the larvae by stinging. Spraying NSO and Sobicron (Cypermethrin) treatments were applied at 20 days interval. Three sprays were made. First spray was made just before flower bud opened; second one was at 50% fruit settings and the final one was at 100% fruit settings. Wrapping were done once on the basis of fruit setting. At least 15 fruits were wrapped in each tree. After 30 days of wrapping the fruits were opened and marked. The data on number of infested and healthy fruits were recorded.
