The efficacy of Celaflor as anti-ovipositional, ovicidal and larvicidal agents at 0.50, 1.0 and 2.0% concentration was assessed against pulse beetle, Callosobruchus chinensis (L.) in the laboratory of the Department of Entomology, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from July to October, 2009. The result indicated that Celaflor had adverse significant effect on the oviposition of pulse beetle. With the increasing concentration, the number of eggs laid and the number of egg bearing seeds were reduced. Total number of eggs laid were 226.66, 185.33 and 113.33 and egg bearing seeds were 88.0, 75.33 and 40.33 @ 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0% concentrations, respectively compared to 247.33 and 96.33 in control treatment. Celaflor also showed ovicidal and larvicidal properties against pulse beetle. Adult emergence of pulse beetle reduced by 81.14 and 36.01% at 2.0% concentration of Celaflor in ovicidal and larvicidal experiments, respectively in comparison to control.  Therefore, Celaflor might be promising for the protection of pulses from the attack of C. chinensis.

To evaluate the anti-ovipositional, ovicidal and larvicidal efficacy of Celaflor against pulse beetle, C. chinensis. 

The experiment was conducted to evaluate the anti-ovipositional, ovicidal and larvicidal properties of Celaflor against pulse beetle, Callosobruchus chinensis (L.) on chickpea seeds in the laboratory of the Department of Entomology, Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh during the period from July to October, 2009. The commercial preparation of Celaflor was liquid formulation (contains 0.03 % azadirachtin) and was tested at 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0% concentrations.Anti-ovipositional properties of Celaflor: Healthy and insect free one hundred chickpea seeds were weighed and kept in petridishes (90 mm dia.). From each concentration of Celaflor, 400 µl was taken by micro-pipette and applied on seeds by drop. They were properly mixed and left sometime for air drying. Distilled water was applied only in control treatment. Three replications were made for each treatment. Five pairs of newly emerged beetles were then released in each petridish. The petridishes were kept in a large insect rearing metal cage having glass in one side. The cage was then wrapped with brown paper to make dark condition and left undisturbed. After 7 days of release, adult beetles were removed and the eggs laid on chickpea seeds of each treatment in the petridish were counted individually using hand lens. The number of egg bearing seeds and total number of eggs per petridish were recorded. Ovicidal properties of Celaflor: Twenty seeds along with one day old eggs (one seed containing one egg) were placed in each petridish and treated with different concentrations of Celaflor. For seed treatment, 200 µl of each prepared concentration was taken by micro-pipette and then applied directly on egg bearing chickpea seeds by drop. They were mixed well to ensure uniform coating of insecticide on the grains. In control treatment seeds were treated with distilled water only. Three replications were made for each treatment. The chickpea seeds along with eggs were placed in the same petridishes and kept in the insect rearing cage till the emergence of adults. The emerged adult beetles were counted daily from first to last emergence and removed everyday from the petridishes and recorded. Larvicidal properties of Celaflor: Twenty seeds with one day old single egg (one seed containing one egg) were placed in each petridish and left for seven days for hatching. On the seventh day, chickpea seeds along with larvae were treated with different concentrations of Celaflor following the same procedure as mentioned in ovicidal experiment. Three replications were given for each treatment. The emerged adult beetles were counted daily from first to last emergence and removed everyday from the petridishes and recorded. Statistical analysis: The observed data were statistically analyzed in accordance with one factor Completely Randomized Design (CRD) and treatment mean values were compared by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT). All statistical analysis were done through a package programme namely, Microsoft statistical (MSTAT) programme in a computer.
