Assessment of BARI Technology Village in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was carried out in 12 technology villages under 9 districts to find out the yield gap of different crop varieties developed by BARI and to evaluate their performance in the crop museum plot as well as contract farmers plot during the year 2003-04. The average yield gap of potato (Cardinal, Diamand, Raza, Dheera, and Multa), mustard (BARI 9), lentil (BARI 4) and Wheat (Shotabdi) was found below 15 percent in museum plot and in contract farmer plot, the yield gap of wheat was 10 percent. Potato (Cardinal, Dheera, Raza), wheat (Sourav, Gourav, Shotabdi), lentil (BARI-4) chickpea (BARI-5), bush bean (BARI-1) performed well in museum plot. The reasons behind performing not well varieties were supply of seed in late, insect pest infestation, and not providing training to the farmers. To reach the goal of BARI technology village theme, seed and training should be provided to the farmer’s timely as well as related scientists under each discipline must be involved with the activities.

Objectives:

i. To identify the socio-economic characteristics of the farmers; ii. To identify the cropping patterns with respect to before and after introduction of BARI technology; iii. To find out the yield gap of different crop varieties; iv. To determine how much additional income earned after introduction of BARI technology; v. To evaluate the performance of different varieties and vi. To identify the causes of performing not well varieties in the BARI technology village.

Methodology:

BARI technology village activity has been implemented in 21 sites in Bangladesh. The study was conducted in 12 among 21 sites. Total numbers of contract farmers were 360 in 12 sites treated as population. Off the total, 180 contract farmers selected randomly taking 15 from each site and were interviewed by survey method with the help of pre-designed interview schedules during 2003-2004. Besides, single farmer of the museum plot was also interviewed from each site by structured interview schedule. Collected data were edited, coded and analyzed by tabular method.

The theme of BARI Technology village is very good and timely. After introduction of BARI technology, cropping pattern has changed in the museum plots as well as contract farmers plot. Yield gap of potato, mustard, lentil, chickpea, bush bean and cowpea was found reasonable cultivation of BARI crops in museum plot earned additional income to the farmers. Some varieties like potato (Cardinal, heera, raza), wheat (sourav, gourav, shotabdi), lentil (BARI-4), chickpea (BARI-5), bush bean, cowpea performed well. Cauliflower (rupa), cabbage (augradut), brinjal (BARI-1, 4) performed not well. The reasons behind not performing well varieties were insect pest infestation and crop damaged by hailstorm and fog etc.
