Collection and Evaluation of Brinjal Germplasm Resistant to Fruit and Shoot Borer and Jassid

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study on collection and evaluation of different brinjal germplasm were conducted at Horticulture Research Centre, BARI, Gazipur during Rabi 2009-2010 cropping season. Fifteen brinjal germplasm viz., 21-Chaga, Hybrid (11x13), SM0018, EGN, BL072, Kazla, Hybrid (14x5), Hybrid (1x14), SM001, Tarapuri, SM009, Nayantara, SM0020, BARI Begun-8 and SM0019) were evaluated against brinjal shoot and fruit borer. Results indicated that 21-Chega had the highest (38.8%) infestation followed by Nayantara (38.5%) and the lowest in SM0011 (14.6%) followed by SM009 (15.01%). Four lines (EGN, Kazla, SM0011 and SM009) were found moderately resistant, eight (Hybrid-11X13, SM0018, BL072, Hybrid-1X14, Tarapuri, SM0020, BARI begun-8 and SM0019) were moderately susceptible and three (21-Chega, Hybrid-14X5 and Nayantara) were susceptible to brinjal shoot and fruit borer (Leucinodes orbonalis G.). Considering jassid (Amrasca devastance Dist.), the lowest jassid incidence was recorded in Nayantara (1.9 jassid/leaf) and the highest in SM0020 (4.7 jassid/leaf). Rest of the lines showed various reaction in respect to brinjal shoot and fruit borer and jassid infestation in brinjal. Results indicated that brinjal line SM0011 found tolerant to brinjal shoot and fruit borer and brinjal variety Nayantara and SM0018 found tolerant to jassid in the study.

Objectives:

To identify suitable resistant/tolerant variety or line against fruit and shoot borer.

Methodology:

Evaluation of brinjal germplasm was conducted at the experimental field of Entomology section, Horticulture Research Centre of BARI, Joydebpur during Rabi 2009-2010 cropping season. Fifteen brinjal lines: 21-Chaga, Hybrid (11x13), SM0018, EGN, BL072, Kazla, Hybrid (14x5), Hybrid (1x14), SM001, Tarapuri, SM009, Nayantara, SM0020, BARI Begun-8 and SM0019. The experiment was laid out in a RCB design with three replications. Unit plot size was 7mx1m. The number of BSFB infested shoot and fruits and number of jassid/plant were recorded at 15 days interval.

Achievement/Findings:

Brinjal lines 21-Chaga and Hybrid (14x5) are more susceptible to BSFB. Whereas SM0020, Hybrid (11x13), SM0019 and BL072 are more susceptible to jassid.
