Present Status of BARI Released Variety in the Seed Market of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Based on seller’s opinion, 51% farmer knew the variety name and 29% farmer knew the name of the seed company. Out of 39 BARI released variety 25 varieties were available in the market and it indicated that out of 17 types of vegetables 15 vegetables seed of BARI released variety were found in the market. Cent percent seed seller sold the varieties Raton (Tomato), BARI Dherosh-1 (Okra), Tasakisan (Radish) among all the varieties. In this study all the varieties of individual vegetable which are available in the market were ranked in respect of amount of sell and quality. It is found that on the basis of amount of sell, under the rank one of the BARI varieties were Tasakisan 43%, BARI Derosh-1 87%, Roton 60%, BARI LAO-1 48%, BARI Gimakalmi 68% BARI Sheem-1 33%, BARI bati sak-1 100% , Uttara 27%, BARI Lalsak-1 24%, BARI Chinasak-1 100%, BARI Motor-1 100%, BARI Puisak-1 13%, BARI Jharseem-1 100% and Laboni 50% . However 63% seller’s reported sale of BARI variety was high.

Objectives:

i. To know the level of knowledge about BARI among the sellers ii. To measure the rank of BARI released variety on the basis of selling quantity and quality among the available variety in the market iii. To identify the problems of selling BARI released variety iv. To suggest some policy to increase sell of BARI variety

Methodology:

This study was confined mainly on the sale status of BARI released vegetable variety in the seed market. The study locations were selected on the basis of vegetable growing area. Six districts i.e. Mymensing, Rangpur, Bogra, Jessore, Khulna and Chittagong were selected for this study. For this study, five seed shops were selected from the each district city market. The sample size was 30 in this study. Data were collected through using simple random sampling technique. Pre-tasted schedule was used to collect the information. Both primary and secondary data were collected for this study. Only descriptive statistics was used for the analysis of the data.

Achievement/Findings:

It was revealed that 64% BARI vegetables varieties were available in the market. Among them, 12% varieties were sold by 100% seller. All the BARI varieties were belonged in the first rank on the basis of quantity and quality, which are available in the market. The main problems of selling BARI variety were insufficient supply of seed, lack of good quality seed, and lack of information of new released BARI variety. In solution of problem it can be stated that more research on new vegetable for new variety is needed, increase the supply of breeder, increase-proving information of new variety to the seller, establish the copyright act on the name of the BARI variety.
