The study was conducted during 2003-2004 to document and mapping of major spices crops in Bangladesh through the application of Geographic Information System (GIS) technology. Data for the present study were collected from Statistical Yearbooks of Bangladesh and DAE. Computer software’s like Excel, SPSS, Arc-view and Arc-Info were used for documenting, mapping and analyzing the data. From the figures and maps of different spices crops, it was found that the area and production of onion, chilly and garlic occupied the major share of spices crops in Bangladesh. The growth rate of area and production of chilly is found very high compared to other spices crops. Its area expansion should be intensified in the farmers’ fields for its higher production and area increase.

i. To find out the documentation and mapping of major spices ii. To find out the statistical measurement and graphs of these spices and iii. To find out the growth rate and trend (area, production and yield ) of these spices

For this experiment secondary data were used in the study. Computer software’s like Excel, SPSS, Arc-View, Arc-info and other related measures were used for this purpose. Secondary data from BBS(1998-2001), AED and other sources were used in the study. Data were entered in the computer by using the programs such as MS-Excel, Fox-pro, Ms-access. The boundary of the data was taken for last six years. GIS Center of BARI was used for mapping and documentation. District boundary map was digitized by using Arc-Info program. The administrative boundaries of 21 districts were used for mapping of spices. Data were converted into standard units (ha, tons). Data were classified into some classes on the basis of particular cultivated area of different spices crops. The area under each class (frequency) belong to each district was identified by tally marks. The growth rate calculation was done with the help of OES Semi Log function by Excel and SPSS program. Other package programs such as MS-Word, power point were also used for the purpose.

The average area of chilly in the last seven years (1995/96-2001) was found to be 121 thousand ha (63% of the total area), onion 34 thousand ha (18%), garlic 13 thousand ha (5%), turmeric 16 thousand ha (7%), ginger 7 thousand ha (4%), Coriander 6 thousand ha (2%) and others 1 thousand ha (1%). Barisal, Noakhali, Comilla, Faridpur, Bogra and Patuakhali districts covered 82% area of chlli which produced 85% of total production. Maximum yield was found in Rangpur 1.36m.ton/ha. Eighty percent of the area of onion was covered by 8 districts namely Faridpur, Pabna, Jessore, Dhaka, Rajshahi, Dinajpur, Rangpur and Kushtia which together produced 84%of onion. Faridpur alone covered 19% area and produced 19% onion. Maximum yield was found in Rajshahi 5.38 m.ton/ha. The annual rate of change of area and production of different spices crops were calculated for last seven years from 1994-95to 2000-2001. It was found that the annual rate of change of area (97.02%) and production (98.60%) of chilly were very high compared to other spices crops. The rate of change of area of onion, garlic, turmeric, ginger, coriander and others were 10.12%, 5.26%, 4.93%, 5.29%, 2.26% and 2.24% respectively. After chilly, the rate of change of production of onion was 8.63%, garlic 6.69%, turmeric 3.36%, ginger 1.34%, coriander 7.95% and others 2.45% respectively. The analysis indicated that prospect of chilly cultivation in Bangladesh has very bright future. Also in comparative statement of onion, garlic, turmeric and ginger, it was seen that area, production and yield of chilly were increasing rapidly.
