Confined Field Trials of Bt Transgenic Brinjal Lines at Joydebpur, Gazipur

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Efficacy of eight Bt brinjal lines were evaluated against the field population of brinjal shoot and fruit borer (BSFB) in the confined field of Biotechnology Division of BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur during February – May 2011. Shoot infestation in the Bt brinjal lines were differed significantly than their non-Bt version in all tested lines. The range of shoot infestation in the Bt plants was 0.1 – 2.5%, whereas it was in the non-Bt plants were 7.9 – 16.9%. Fruit infestation in the Bt brinjal lines were also differed significantly than their non-Bt version in all cases. The range of fruit infestation in the Bt plants was 0.0 – 9.3%, whereas it was in the non-Bt plants were 6.7 – 77.3%. With few exceptions, the incidence of other pests was more or less similar in Bt and non-Bt brinjal lines.

Objectives:

1) Verification of degree of tolerance/resistance of Bt brinjal varieties against BSFB 2) Selection of resistant variety(s) against BSFB

Methodology:

Studies were carried out in confined transgenic crop research field of Biotechnology, BARI, Gazipur during February – May 2011. Efficacy of eight Bt brinjal lines, viz. Uttara, Kazla, Nayantara, Khotkhotia, Chaga, Singhnath, ISD 006, Dohazari along with their eight isolines were tested against the field population of BSFB. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design having 3 replications. Bt and non-Bt brinjal seedlings were developed in the confined greenhouse. After Bt confirmation test, 35-40 days old Bt plants along with their non-Bt versions were planted in a plot of 3 x 5 sqm having a row spacing of 90 cm and plot spacing of 60 cm. In the trials, standard agronomic practices were done to raise the crop. Data was recorded from randomly 6 plants selected from inner three rows out of 35 plants of each unit plot at weekly intervals. Selection of plants were done in an alternative manner (one week selection of plants started from the right side another week from the left side and then select plant at an alternative manner, i.e, select one plant then ignore the next one again select the next one). Data on total shoot and fruits per plant and the number of infested shoot and fruits were recorded. Percent shoot and fruit infestations were calculated from the recorded data. At the same time number of other pests (jassid, whitefly, aphid, epilachna and mealy bug) and some selective predators (lady bird beetle) were also counted and recorded from the selected 6 plants per plot.
