The present study was undertaken to determine the costs and returns as well as the relative profitability of Meher Sagar and Amrita Sagar varieties of banana prodiuction and compare them each other in the study area. To achieve these objectives, 20 farmers 101 growing Amrita Sagar and 40 farmers for Meher Sagar were randomly selected. Data were collected from four villages-two villages from Shakhipur upazila or Tangail district, namely Mucharia Pathar and Gajaria and two villages from Bhaluka upazila of Mymensingh district, namely, Batajore and Gilachala. Mainly tabular analysis was done to achieve the objectives or the study. Cobb-Douglas production model was also estimated to determine the contributions or some important input to banana production. It is revealed that Amrita Sagar banana was more profitable than Meher Sagar banana production. Per hectare gross returns, net returns above cash cost and net return above full cost or Amrita Sagar banana production were TK. 206782.23, TK. 1275 16.97 and TK. 91793.29 respectively. while the corresponding returns for Meher Sagar banana production were TK. 182505.59. TK. 106821.73 and TK. 7'2167.55 respectively. The study also revealed that banana growers raced various types of problems such as lack of capital low output price, high input price, lack of storage facilities, hartal, storm and other social and natural problems. Ensuring adequate and timely supply of inputs easy access to institutional credit extension or scientific information on banana production were suggested for solving the problems and constraints associated with banana production.

(i) To determine costs and return of Amrita Sagar and Meher Sagar varieties of banana production and compare the relative profitability of the enterprises.

(ii) To indentify production and marketing problems of banana growers and to suggest policy implication.

The area selected for the study covered four villages. Two villages from Shakhipur upazila of Tangail district, namely Mucharia Pathar and Gajaria and two villages from Bhaluka upazila of' Mymensingh district, namely, Batajore and Gilachala were purposively selected. In total 60 farmers, 20 farmers who grew Amrita Sagar and 40 farmers who grew Meher Sagar were randomly selected. Survey method was used to collect the data. The collected data were coded, tabulated and analysed for achieving the ultimate objectives of the study. Mainly tabular method using average, percentages were followed. Moreover, to determine the contributions of some important inputs to banana production, the Cobb-Douglas production models were estimated. Specification measurement of management factor is difficult to accomplish particularly in the peasant agriculture where a farm operator is both a labourer and a manager and the farm and the household constitute an inseparable component. YAS = Gross return from Amrita Sagar banana production (Tk. / ha), YMS = Gross return from Meher Sagar banana production (Tk. / ha), bo / ß0 = Constant/intercept value, XI = Cost of seedlings (Tk./ ha), X2 = Cost of human labour (Tk./ ha), X3 = Cost of fertilizer (Tk./ ha), X4 = Cost of insecticide (Tk./ ha), X5 = Cost of irrigation (Tk./ ha), Ui = Error term, In = Natural logarithm, bl ..... b5 = ß1, ... ß5 = Co-efficient of respective variables, Number of farmers = 20 for Amrita Sagar and 40 for Meher Sagar varieties of banana growers.

In the context of income generation and poverty alleviation, production of banana plays a crucial role in meeting the cash needs of the farmers. It was observed in the study that Amrita Sagar banana was more profitable than Meher Sagar banana production. Banana growers, however, experienced some problems. To ensure an increase in banana production and to increase their profitability, the problems identified by the banana growers should be solved. The extension workers may encourage farmers of the surrounding areas to follow the scientific methods in growing the enterprises. As a means of banana production may be encouraged.
