The experiment was carried out at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur to study the effect of integrated nutrient management in maize-rice cropping pattern and to evaluate the direct and residual effects of different organic manures and chemical fertilizers on yield and yield contributing characters and nutrient uptake by BRRI dhan 33 and on the changes of fertility status of soil. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with eight treatments and three replications. Except the control and recommended doses (RD) of inorganic fertilizers, six other treatments were composed of combination of inorganic and organic sources of nutrients where 50 and 75% recommended doses of N were provided using urea and the remaining 50 and 25% were supplied using either cowdung (CD), poultry manure (PM) or household wastes (HW). Treatment receiving equal amounts (50%) of nutrients from organic and inorganic sources gave the highest grain and straw yields. Among the organic manures, the effect of poultry manure was prominent than that of cowdung and household wastes. Addition of 50% N using poultry manure produced the highest grain yield (5.01 t ha-1) and straw yield (5.433 t ha-1) of T. Aman.

Experimental site, soil and crop: The study was conducted at the Research farm of the Bangladesh Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU), Gazipur in T. Aman season of 2009. The experiment was carried out at the same plot where maize was grown to evaluate the direct and residual effect of organic manures along with chemical fertilizers. The experimental soil was of Shallow Red-Brown Terrace soil. BRRI Dhan 33 a high yielding variety was used as the test crop. Eight treatments consisting of urea, household wastes, poultry manure and cowdung including one absolute control were assigned for the experiment. Layout and design of the experiment: The experiment was laid out in the randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. In the previous experiment, each block consisted of eight plots. But in case of T. Aman rice experiment, each plot was divided into two parts except the control plot to evaluate the residual effect of household wastes, poultry manure and cowdung. Fertilizer and manure application. Fertilizers were applied following recommended dose. Well decomposed household wastes (HW), poultry manure (PM) and cowdung (CD) were applied as per treatments one week before final land preparation and incorporated with the soil. Transplanting of seedling:  Thirty days aged seedlings were transplanted in the experimental plots on 4th July, 2009 in T. Aman season maintaining the spacing of 20 cm line to line and 15 cm plant to plant. Harvesting and data collection. The crop was harvested at maturity after 120 days. Data were collected on yield and yield contributing characters, nutrient content and uptake by rice. Chemical analyses of plant samples and initial and post harvest soil samples were done using standard methods.

Application of manures also showed significant positive effects on N, P, K and S contents in rice grains and straw. The highest amounts of N (87.55 kg ha-1), P (17.20 kg ha-1), K (83.74 kg ha-1) and S (10.759 kg ha-1) uptake were observed in treatment receiving 50% N through urea in combination with 50% N through poultry manure. Yield and yield contributing characters were directly influenced by the residual effects of organic manures. The direct and residual effects of organic manures and inorganic fertilizers significantly influenced the physical and chemical properties of soils. Organic matter, soil pH, total N, available P, exchangeable K and available S in post harvest soil were increased due to application of organic manure compared to initial soil.
