A field study was conducted at BRRI farm Gazipur to find out the water requirement of WSR, effectiveness of herbicide and economic benefit of herbicide. The study indicates that the higher yield was obtained from broadcasting (5.12t/ha) followed by line sowing (5.06t/ha). Irrigation treatment T1  gave higher yield (5.21 t/ha). No herbicide use but 3 hand weeding done gave higher yield. In interaction effect the highest yield was obtained from combination of line sowing, no herbicide use but 3 hand weeding and 3 days after disappearing of standing water. Weed infestation was lower in herbicide use before sowing. Also BCR was higher in herbicide use before sowing.

  3. To analyze the economics of herbicide use in wet seeded rice.

The study was conducted at BRRI farm Gazipur. There were two water treatments, three herbicide treatments and two sowing methods. The experiment was split-split plot design with three replications of which, main plot was water treatments, sub plot was sowing method and sub-sub plot was herbicide treatments. Treatments were- a. Water treatments:  I1= 5-7 cm irrigation water applied 3 days after disappearing of standing water: I2= 5-7 cm irrigation water applied 5 days after disappearing of standing water. b. Sowing method:  S1= Line sowing with 20 cm spacing; S2= Broadcasting. c. Weeding method:  W1= Herbicide use during final land preparation but before sowing, W2= Herbicide use 6 days after sowing and W3= Hand weeding. Plot size was 4m x 2.5m. The variety was BRRI dhan28. Sprouted seed was sown. Seed rate was 70 kg/ha. Fertilizer rate was 220-120-85-60-10 kg/ha urea, TSP, MP, Gypsum and ZnSO4, respectively. All fertilizer except urea was applied during land preparation. Urea was top dressed in 4 equal splits at an interval of 20-25-30-15 days consecutively. Hand weeding was done 25, 50 and 75 days after sowing. Cidial 5G was applied for insect control on 19 March 2002.

Water productivity (5.88 kg/ha mm) was higher in 3 days after disappearing of standing water along with line sowing and hand weeding (I1S1W3). 3 days after disappearing of standing water gave better performance (88.63%WUE) compared to 5 days after disappearing of standing water)  (81%). Grain yield and yield attributes of wet seeded rice were not significantly influenced by effect of irrigation treatment. Significant differences were observed among the different weeding methods in terms of plant height; tiller/m2 and grain yield. Similar result was found from herbicide application before sowing (W2). Yield and yield contributing characters of Wet Seeded Rice were significantly influenced by the interaction effect of irrigation, sowing method and weeding method, except 1000 grain weight. Highest plant height (84.93 cm) was observed from 5 days after disappearing of standing water along with broad cast sowing and herbicide application after sowing (12S2W2). Significantly, the highest grain yield of wet seeded rice (5.67 t/ha) was recorded from 3 days after disappearing of standing water along with line sowing and hand weeding which was identical with the yield (5.35 t/ha) of 3 days after disappearing of standing water along with broadcast sowing and hand weeding. 

The highest net return of Tk 7536/ha was obtained from 3 days after disappearing of standing water along with line sowing and hand weeding (I1S1W3) followed by a net return of Tk. 6127/ha from  3 days after disappearing of standing water  along with broadcasting and hand weeding method (I1S2W3 ). The maximum benefit cost ratio of 1.26 was obtained from 3 days after disappearing of standing water along with line sowing and hand weeding method (I1S1W3).
