Five fungicides were tested to evaluate their effect on the inhibition of conidial germination of Colletorichum falcatum. Benlate in different concentrations and immersion periods were found to be the best fungicide for the inhibition of conidial germination. Among fourteen plant extracts assayed, 100%  inhibition of conidial germination of C. falcatum was noted with the application of extracts of Blumera lasera leaf, Swietenia mahagoni bark, Allium sativum, bulb and Curcuma domestica leaf. Rest of the plant extracts showed more or less inhibitory effect against conidial germination at 5% concentration. Fumigation using smoke of wheat straw, rice straw dhup (3a-Hydroxy-urs-12-eu 11 Keto-23 oic acids) and tobacco leaf were evaluated for the inhibition of conidial germination. Dhup smoke was found to be the most effective against the pathogen. Smokes from the other sources have more or less inhibitory effect against the fungus.

To find out the effect of fungicides, Plant extracts and smoke of plant and plant products on the germination of spore of C. falcatum the causal fungus of red rot of sugarcane.

The experiment was conducted in the Plant Pathology Laboratory, Department of Botany, Rajshahi University during 2003-2004 crop seasons. Colletorichum falcatum, the causal fungus of red rot of sugarcane was isolated from stem tissue of infected sugarcane and cultured on oatmeal agar medium. Ten days old culture of pathogen was used for each experiment. Spores of C. falcatum were collected from 10 days old oatmeal culture of the pathogen and suspended in plant extracts as well as fungicides suspensions at 10s spores/ml. Five mililitres of each conidial suspension was put in 65 mm glass Petri dish and kept at 25°C for 4, 6, 8, 12, 16 and 24 hours. Treated spore suspension of each concentration was poured in well depression slides and then a drop of lactophenol cotton blue was put over the spore suspension on the slides. The slides were examined under the microscope at high power (x400) for recording the percentage of inhibition of conidial germination of C. falcatum. Rice straw, wheat straw, tobacco leaves, and 'dhup' were burnt in a metal pot with a cover fitted with rubber tube, the resulting smoke was cooled to ambient temperature by passing through the rubber tube. The cooled smoke introduced into Petri dishes containing oatmeal agar with fungal colony, The Petri plates containing cultures were placed for varying length of time (5, 10,15 and 20 minutes) in the smoke chamber (a wooden box of 0.5m x 0.5m x 0.5m where smoke was passed through by rubber tube) and exposed to dense rice straw, wheat straw, tobacco leaves, and 'dhup' smoke. Aqueous suspension of conidia of C. falcatum perviously exposed to rice straw, wheat straw, tobacco leaves, and 'dhup' was prepared at 105 conidia/ml concentration and poured into well of depression slides. The slides were incubated in a moist chamber for 24 hours for recording the inhibition percentage of germination of conidia. The Petri dishes and the depression slides were arranged on the laboratory desk following completely randomized design. Each treatment was represented by three replicated Petri dishes or depression slides. Statistical analysis of data given as percentage was carried out from angular transformed values and analyzed by using Microsoft Excel Software. LSD were determined. The calculated ‘F’ value was estimated at 5% level.

Application of chemical fungicides is a conventional Method to control the disease caused b y fungal pathogen. Tremendous health hazards are reported to occur during the application of fungicides I field condition. Present experiment has been carried out to find out the medicinal plants which have antifungal activity. Their application will protect the environment and avoid health hazards of animal kingdom. This study suggest that all the tested plant extracts specially B. lasera leaf, S. mahagoni bark, A. sativam bulb and C. domestica leaf as well as all the tested smoke generated specially from rice straw, dhup and tobacco leaf have antifungal effect against the red rot pathogen Colletorichum falcatum. Application of these plant extracts in field condition may be tested if these are able to reduce the fungal population and thus reduce the disease incidence.
