Growth Analysis of Wheat Community Using Functional Technique

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Effect of soil moisture on dry matter, leaf area and growth attributes of two wheat cultivars was studied in field condition. Polynomial functions were fitted to the natural logarithmic values of dry weight and leaf area data. Total dry weight and leaf area index (LA!) were increased by soil moisture. The derived growth attributes such as CGR , NAR, LAR, RLGR , SLA and LWR showed strong ontogenetic decline. Soil moisture effect on these growth attributes were not similar and this effect was different at the various stages of growth.

Objectives:

To study the effect of soil moisture on crop growth and its components in wheat.

Methodology:

Two wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars viz ., Akbar and Barkat were used The experiment was arranged in a split plot design with three replications. Two treatments were adopted viz ., (i) irrigated at 3 times throughout the growing period and (ii) no irrigation (rainfed). On each occasion 10 mm water was uniformly applied to the irrigated plots with sprinkles . The total amount of water received as irrigation was 30 mm and as rainfall 126 mm. Six plants were selected for each cultivar from each treatment for each harvest. Thirteen harvests were taken at equal intervals of 7 days for growth analysis . The first harvest was taken at 24 days after sowing (DAS). At each harvest, plants were separated into different parts and dry weights were taken after oven-drying at 85°C for 24 hrs. To determine the different growth attributes , curve-fitting (functional technique ) was followed . In the curve-fitting method, polynomial functions were fitted to natural logarithmic values of total dry weight , leaf dry weight and total leaf area. The loge transformation was made in order to render the variance homogeneous with time

Achievement/Findings:

The residual sum of squares were calculated for linear, quadratic and cubic equations fitted to loge total dry matter per unit ground area, loge LAI, loge total dry matter per plant, loge leaf area per plant and loge leaf dry weight as a function of time 1n both the cultivars (data not shown) . The changes in LAI, leaf area per plant and leaf dry weight were adequately described by the second degree polynomial, but for total dry matter per plant third degree polynomial was adequate except rainfed Akbar . For comparison the second degree polynomial curves were used in all cases. Effect of soil moisture on total dry matter (TOM) of two wheat cultivars is shown in Figure 1A Increase of total dry matter was slow at the early vegetative stages but increased rapidly with the advancement of the growth period in both the cultivars and treatments. In Barkat, irrigated plants had higher TOM but it declined below the rainfed plants at the later stage. Total dry matter production was significantly greater in the irrigated plants. Soil moisture effect on net assimilation rate (NAR) was not pronounced until about 80 OAS· thereafter irrigated NAR of Akbar Increased rapidly and of Barkat decreased gradually . Higher NAR due to higher soil moisture was found by El and Raj sorghum The increase of NAR at the later stages may be due to decreased leaf area and increased. Starting from a maximum value, leaf weight ratio (LWR) declined sharply with increasing age in both the cultivars and treatments . Both the cultivars had higher LWR at the rainfed condition . The decrease of LWR was caused by increased plant dry weight and decreased LAI at the later stages . The results of the present study reveal that soil moisture increased both the dry matter and leaf area, but the soil moisture effect on different growth attributes was not similar. This study further indicates that curve fitting may be useful for comparative purposes , since it can remove fluctuations in data caused by sampling error.
