DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION EDUCATION Bangladesh Agricultural University Mymensingh, NOVEMBER, 2001

The major  purposes  of the study  were (i)  to determine farmers' knowledge  on improved practices  of  pineapple  cultivation, (ii)  to  determine  and  describe some  of  the  selected characteristics of the pineapple growers, and (iij) to explore the relationship of the selected characteristics of  the  pineapple  growers with  their  knowledge on  improved  practices  of pineapple  cultivation.  The  selected  characteristics were  farmers'  age, education, family size, farm  size, area  under  pineapple  cultivation, annual  income, organizational participation, extension  contact, innovative ness and  problems  of pineapple growers'. Knowledge  on  improved  practices  of  pineapple  growers constituted  the only dependent variable,  which  was  denationalized  by  developing  a knowledge  score.  Ausnara  union under  Madhupur   Upazila  of  Tangail  district   was  the  locale  of  study. 7  villages  were selected  at  random.  The total  number  of  pineapple  growers  in  these  villages  was  502, which  constituted   the population  of  the  stud y.  Data  were  collected   personally  through interview  schedule  from  I00  pine apple  growers  (20 percent) randomly selected  pineapple growers  during 27'  August  to 25  September 200I . Pearson  product moment correlation coefficients were  used  to explore  the  relationship   between  dependent and  independent variables. The  study  revealed  that  knowledge  on  improved  practices  of  pineapple  cultivation   of pineapple   growers   ranged   from  20  to  43  against  the  possible   range  from  0  to  50. Knowledge  scores  indicate  that  62  percent  of  the  pineapple   growers   possessed  good knowledge. 33 percent poor knowledge  and on l y 5 percent possessed  excellent knowledge.Statistical   analysis  revealed   that  out  of  ten  independent   variables  only   live  namely. farmers'  education,  organizational   participation,  extension  contact, innovative ness  and problems of pineapple growers showed significant relationship with their knowledge on improved  practices  of pineapple cultivation. Other five variables namely, age, family size, farm size, area under pineapple cultivation and annual  income did not show any significant relationship with their knowledge on improved  practices of pineapple cultivation.

  Knowledge Management
  Pineapple

1. To determine the knowledge of the farmers on pineapple cultivation.

2. To determine  the  characteristics of the farmers.

3.To explore the relationship of the selected characteristics of  the  pineapple  growers with  their  knowledge on  improved  practices  of pineapple  cultivation.

An up to date list of all pineapple farmers of the selected villages was prepared with the help of Block Supervisors. Thus, 502 farmers of the selected villages constituted the population of the study. Respondents were then selected at the rate of 20 percent following simple random sampling method . The number of samples so drawn was 100. Moreover, a reserve list of 10 farmers was prepared for use when the farmers under samples were not available during data collection. Thus, 100 farmers were the sample of the study.,  an  interview schedule  was  prepared  keeping  the objectives in view. The schedule contained   both the open  and closed  form of questions. Simple  and  direct  questions   were  included   in  the  schedule  to  ascertain   the  extent  of knowledge  on   improved   practices   of   pineapple  cultivation  and   most  of  the  selected characteristics of the pineapple growers without giving rise to doubt and misunderstanding in  their  minds. The  questions  were  framed  and  arranged   systematically  based  on  the characteristics of a good  schedule. The  schedule was designed  in Bangla  to ensure easy communication between the researcher and  the subjects   The  interview  schedule  initially prepared  was pre- tested by administering the same to ten pineapple growers of the Study area before  finalizing  the same for collection of data. This pretest  facilitated  the researcher to examine  the  suitability of  different  quest ions  and   treatment of  schedule  in general Necessary additional. alternations and adjustments were made . The  interviews  schedule was then cyclostyled  in its final form for collection of data.

The study revealed that knowledge on improved practices of pineapple cultivation of pineapple growers ranged from 20 to 43 against the possible range from 0 to 50. Knowledge scores indicate that 62 percent of the pineapple growers possessed good knowledge. 33 percent  poor knowledge and only 5 percent possessed excellent knowledge.Statistical analysis revealed that out of ten independent variables only live namely. farmers' education, organizational participation, extension contact, innovative ness and problems of pineapple growers showed significant relationship with their  knowledge on improved practices of pineapple cultivation. Other five variables namely, age, family size, farm size, area under pineapple cultivation and annual income did not show any significant relationship with their knowledge on improved practices of pineapple cultivation.
