Genetic variability, character association and path coefficient analysis among different characters of nineteen ginger (Zingiber Officinale Rose.) genotypes were studied. Genetic advance in percentage of mean along with heritability was very high for tillers per plant, plant height, leaf length, leaf breadth. leaves per tiller, number of primary fingers per rhizome. number of secondary fingers per rhizome and number of tertiary fingers per rhizome. Phenotyptc Coefficient of Variation was more or less same or little bit higher than Genotypic Coefficient of Variation for all these characters. All the characters except percent dry matter of rhizome showed positive and significant correlation with rhizome yield. Leaves per tiller showed the highest positive direct effect on rhizome yield per plant. Direct selection for this trait would be effective. Plant height showed negative direct effect on yield per plant but positive and high indirect effect via all the characters indicating that a restricted simultaneous selection for this trait may be effective.

To estimate heritability, genetic advance or yield and yield components as well as direct and indirect effect of important character on yield through path co-efficient analysis in order to develop selection criteria for improving rhizome yield potentiality of ginger.

Nineteen genotypes of ginger were used as planting materials; of these ten are local, three from India, four from China, one from Japan and one from Sierra Leon. The genotypes were grown in a completely randomized block design (RCBD) with three replications. Data were recorded from the mean of five plants selected randomly from each genotype in each replication on yield and different yield contributing characters, viz.. tillers per plant (no.). plant height (cm), leaf length (cm), leaf breadth (cm), leaves per tiller (no.), number of primary fingers per rhizome (no.), number of secondary fingers per rhrzome (no.), number of tertiary fingers per rhizome (no.)% dry matter of rhizome and rhizome yield per plant (g). Genotypic and phenotypic variances were estimated. The genotypic and phenotypic coefficient of variation was calculated. Heritability in broad sense was also calculated. The expected genetic advance for different characters under selection was estimated. Correlation coefficient were further partitioned into components of direct and indirect effects by path coefficient analysis.

Significant differences were found among the genotypes for all the characters studied. Phenotypic Coefficient of Variation was more or less same or little bit higher than Genotypic Coefficient of Variation for all these characters indicating that environment played a very little role in the expression of these characters. For tillers per plant the mean of all the genotypes was 11.52, which ranged form 5.40 to 29.60. Average leaf length and leaf breadth were 21.53 cm and 2.63 cm, respectively. On an average 1 9.39 leaves per tiller was recorded. Plant height showed maximum positive indirect effect via leaves per tiller (0.643) followed by leaf breadth (0.196). This negative direct effect was counter balanced by positive indirect effects making the total correlation, between plant height and yield per plant positive and highly significant (0.855). Dry matter percentage of rhizome showed negative direct effect on rhizome yield per plant (-0.139). This character also showed the highest negative indirect effect via leaves per tiller (-0.300). The negative correlation of dry matter of rhizome to rhizome yield per plant was a reaction of negative direct effect as well as negative indirect effect via most of the characters. High and significant positive correlation or leaf breadth and leaves per tiller t o rhizome yield were due to their high direct effect and that of number of primary fingers per rhizome, number of secondary fingers per rhizome and number of tertiary fingers per rhizome as well as indirect positive effect via leaves per tiller. The residual effect (0.236) indicated that the character under study contributed for 76.4% variation in yield. It is suggested that there are some other character those contributed 23.6% to the variation in yield per plant.
