The experiment was conducted during 2002-03 cropping season at Bangladesh Sugarcane Research Institute, Ishurdi farm under the High Ganges River Floodplain soils (AEZ-11). It comprised of eight treatments. Results indicated that growth parameters viz; number of tiller, millable canes and yield of cane responded significantly over control, while unit stalk weight, girth, height and all the quality parameters showed non significant effect for different treatment combination. Highest yield of cane (106.3 t ha-1) was obtained from the treatment T4 where recommended dose of fertilizer (N130. P33, K60, S20, Zn3 kg ha-1) with pressmud @ 5.0 t ha-1 was applied. Again the treatment T 2 having that recommended dose of fertilizers with rice mill ash @ 8 t ha-1 also showed better performance in yield (102.2 t ha-1) and yield attributing parameters of sugarcane. Highest gross margin of Tk 112593 and BCR of 2.92 were obtained from the treatment T4. Treatment T 2 also performed better regarding gross margin (Tk.107680.0) and BCR (2.80). It was further observed that organic matter, total N, available P, K and S were built up a little in treatments where pressmud or rice mill ash were applied with inorganic fertilizers.

To develop an economically suitable combination of organic (rice mill ash and pressmud) and inorganic fertilizers in supplementing potassium and on the productivity of sugarcane.

The experiment comprised the following treatment laid out in a randomized complete block design having unit plot size of (8m x 6m) with four replications.Pressmud and rice mill ash of relevant treatment were applied and mixed properly in soils before planting. Forty five days old 2 budded soil bed settling of variety Isd 31 were transplanted in November, 2002. Soil samples were collected from the experimental plots before transplanting of sugarcane seedlings and later analyzed for nutrient status. Soil pH was measured in soil: water suspension at 1: 2.5 by glass electrode. Total N by Kjeldahl method (Jackson, 1973); organic carbon by Wakly and Black wet oxidation method; available P (NaHCO3 extractable) by standard ammonium molybdate method of Olsen; exchangeable K (NH4OAc extractable) by flame photometer; and available S (NH4OA cextractable) by terbidimetric method of Bardsley and Lancaster (Black, 1965).Phosphorus (P) as triple super phosphate (TSP), S as gypsum and Zn as zinc sulphat were applied at a time in trenches; N as urea and K as muriate of potash (MP) were applied in two splits, first after establishment of setts and second at tillering completio stage. After the final land preparation, 45 days old two eyed soil bed settlings were transplanted in late November at 1.0 m between row spacing. After transplanting ( settling a live irrigation was given. Further two irrigations were given at 7 days and 1 days after transplanting for the establishment of settlings. Necessary interculturc operations and both chemical and mechanical control of insect pests and diseases were done as recommended practice. Data on number of tillers, millable canes, height of cane girth of cane and brix per cent were recorded and their interpretations were given on th basis of statistical analysis

From the above discussion it may be concluded that considering yield, yield attributing parameters and economic benefit, application of recommended dose of fertilizers (N130. P33, K60, S20, Zn3 kg ha-1) plus pressmud @ 5 t ha-1 was found superior among the treatments. Again application of recommended dose of fertilizers (N130. P33, K60, S20, Zn3 ) with rice mill ash @ 8 t ha' showed better performance considering yield, yield attributing parameters and economic benefit. It was further found that organic matter, total N, available P, K and S were built up in treatments where pressmud or rice mill ash were applied with inorganic fertilizers over control. Thus the combined dose of recommended fertilizer (N130. P33, K60, S20, Zn3 kg ha-1) with pressmud @ 5.0 t ha-1 or rice mill ash @ 8.0 t ha-1 may be recommended for sustainable production of sugarcane in High Ganges River Floodplain Soil of BSRI Farm.
