Field trial of mechanical rice transplanter BRRI USG applicator, BRRI prilled urea applicator BRRI weeder and BRRI power weeder was conducted in different location of Barisal, Jhalkhathi, Potuakhali, Nilphamari, Kurigram and Rangpur district during Boro/2014, Aus/2014 and Aman/2014 season. The yield of mechanically transplanted rice was always higher than manually transplanted rice. There is no significant yield difference between BRRI USG applicator plot and BRRI prilled urea applicator plot. The urea fertilizer dose was same both in BRRI USG applicator plot and BRRI prilled urea applicator plot. Others crop management were same for all treatments. Field demonstration of seedling raising technique, mechanical rice transplanter, BRRI USG applicator, BRRI prilled urea applicator, BRRI power weeder and BRRI weeder, was conducted in 22, 19 and 19 locations of Barisal, Jhalkhathi, Potuakhali, Nilphamari, Kurigram and Rangpur district during Boro/2014 and Aus/2014 season.  respectively. The farmers were satisfied about the performance of farm machines. They were informed that the seedling raising technique for mechanical transplanter. BRRI weeder was provided to the LFS farmers for long-term use of the machine.

Materials and methods: Machinery and technology demonstrated

  • Seedling raising technique (both mat type and tray type)
  • Mechanical rice transplanter
  • BRRI USG applicator
  • BRRI Prilled Urea Applicator
  • BRRI power weeder
  • BRRI weeder

Location: Adaptive trial of the above farm machinery was conducted in different location of Barisal, Patuakhali, Jhalkhathi, Rangpur, Kurigram and Nilphamari district during boro, aus and aman 2014 season.

Seedling raising technique (both mat and tray type): Seedlings were raised in special technique suitable for mechanical transplanter. In aus and aman season, 12-20 days aged seedlings were used mechanical transplanter. Seedlings were raised in plastic tray in farmers’ field. In each location, different rice variety was used in the trial. Seedlings were raised in both mat and tray type during aus and aman season. In each tray, 140 gm dry seed was used. At least 26-28 numbers of tray were required in each bigha of land to transplant seedling in mechanical transplanter.

Mechanical rice transplanter: Performance of mechanically transplanted rice was compared with manual transplanting BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan48, BRRI dhan44 and BRRI dhan52 were used in Boro and Aus 14 season. Other agricultural input such as fertilizer and crop management were same for all treatments. The treatments were

  • Transplanting by mechanical transplanter (30×15 cm)
  • Manual transplanting (30×15 cm)
  • Manual transplanting (20×20 cm)

BRRI USG applicator and BRRI prilled urea applicator:  Rice variety BRRI dhan29 and BRRI dhan47 were used in the field trial plot. In USG and prilled urea applicator, urea was applied in one time whereas in hand broadcasting urea application was done in three equal splits. Fertilizer and crop management except urea application were same for all treatments. Crop and yield data were collected from the experimental plot. Average yield data was collected from 10 m² area and finally adjusted at 14% moisture content. The treatments were

The yield of mechanically transplanted rice was higher than manual transplanted rice. Prilled urea application by applicator and USG application by USG applicator produced higher grain yield than hand broadcasting of urea application. Time of weeding operation and human drudgery was also less in mechanical weeding compared to manual weeding.
