The aim of the study was i) to determine the extent of participation of school drop out rural youth in selected agricultural and non-agricultural activities related to income generation; ii) to describe nine selected characteristics of school dropout rural youth; and iii) to explore the relationships between the selected characteristics of school dropout rural youth and their participation in selected agricultural and non-agricultural activities related to income generation. Participation index (PI) was developed to measure each of the selected activities. PI ranged from 10 to 110 against a possible range of 0 to 200. Nine activities exceeded PI above 80 and of them growing field crops' (110), growing summer and winter vegetable' (109) , and ' development of agro-based nursery' (99), were the top three activities in rank order. On the other hand, eight activities had PI below 80 and among them 'bee keeping' (32), typing' (22), and wood working' (10) were the lowest three activities in rank order. The distribution of school rural youth according to their overall participation indicated that 49 percent of the respondents had low participation, 42 percent medium and only 9 percent had high participation. The result of correlation analysis revealed that out of nine possible correlations, six were statistically significant. Age, agricultural knowledge, innovativeness and attitude towards technology had significant positive relationship and family farm size and family income had significant negative relationship with their participation in selected agricultural and non-agricultural activities related to income generation.

i) to observe the extent of participation of school drop out rural youth in selected agricultural and non-agricultural activities related to income generation; ii) to describe the selected characteristics of school drop our rural youth; iii) to explore the relationships between the selected characteristics of school drop out rural youth and their participation in selected agricultural and non-agricultural activities related to income generation.

The population of this study was 410 rural youth from 308 rural households having at least one school dropout rural youth aged between 15-30 years in two selected villages of Bhaluka Thana namely, Dhitpur and Mahmudpur under Mymensingh district. Twenty five percent rural youth households were selected by proportionate random sampling method from each of the two villages. One dropout rural youth both male and female was selected at random from each of the households. Thus, 77 school dropout rural youth were finally selected which constituted the sample for this study. Data were collected during March to April 1998 from the sample through interview schedule.Scores of the respondents in 17 selected activities could range from 0 to 34. The scores for 3 kinds of responses namely, no, occasional and regular were 0, 1 and 2 respectively. For clearer understanding, the selected activities were arranged in rank order by developing participation index (PI) by using the following formula. Participation index (PI) = Pnp x 0 + Pop x 1 + Prp x 2.  Where, Pnp  = Percentage of school drop out rural youth with no participation,  POP= Percentage of school drop out rural youth with occasional participation,  PrP = Percentage of school drop out rural youth with regular participation. Participation  index for any selected activity could range from 0 to 200, 0 indicating  no participation and 200 regular participation. Correlation test was employed to explore the relationships  between  the selected characteristics  of drop out rural youth and their extent of participation  in selected activities

Findings and discussion presented above indicated that the income generating avenues in the rural areas are very few and far between. Drop out rural youth from the poor families most often work as labourers, rickshaw pullars and home makers. They have been hardly any befitting job available in the rural areas which could be helpful for earning cash. This portion of population in the rural societies can not go for salaried jobs either in the government or private sector with their limited educational access. Therefore, main recommendations can be put forwarded in this connections are: i) Agriculture and rural development agencies in Bangladesh should immediately undertake comprehensive youth extension programmes to teach the rural youth on agriculture related improved practices and other economic skills to enable the neglected client group become self -employed and satisfying members of the rural social system; ii) The rural youth programmes should incorporate useful training facilities in the specific areas of development related to modern agricultural practices for promoting better knowledge and skills of rural youth; iii) Youth programme planners should give due attention to formulate different ' projects related to crop, vegetable and cultivation of fruits, fish farming, poultry, cattle and goat rearing and such other farming activities so that rural youth can earn cash by involving themselves in these projects. On the other hands, some off-farm activities may also be helpful for rendering cash that is why, the policy makers should also have given proper attention in this regard.
