An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh to examine the effect of phosphorus and boron on yield and yield contributing characters of wheat. Four levels of phosphorus (0, 50, 100 and .150 kg P205/ha) and four levels of boron (0, 1, 2 and 3 kg B/ha) were included In the study. Application of phosphorus increased grain and straw yields significantly, and the highest grain yield (4.35 t/ha) and straw yield (4.53 t/ha) were obtained from 100 kg P205/ha. The grain yield Increased due to the positive effect of phosphorus on number of effective spikelets/spike, grains/spike and 1000-seed weight. Boron also increased seed yield significantly and the highest grain yield was recorded both with 1 and 2 kg B/ha. The increased yield due to boron was attributed to the increase in seeds/spike and 1000-seed weight. The highest grain P content (0.70%) was obtained from 150 kg P205/ha but grain B content was the highest (0.53 ppm) with 100 kg P205/ha. Grain P and B content were also Increased with B application. The highest grain P (0.66%) and B (0.71 ppm) content were recorded with 3kg B/ha.

To study the effect of phosphorus and boron on the yield of wheat.

The experiment was carried out at the Agronomy Field Laboratory'; Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from December 1996 to March 1997 with a view to finding out the effect of phosphorus and boron on the yield and yield contributing characters of wheat variety "Aghrani". The experiment consisted of four levels of phosphorus viz., 0, 50, 100, and 150 kg P205/ha, and four levels of boron viz., 0, 1, 2 and 3 kg 8/ha. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design assigning the levels of phosphorus to the main plots and levels of boron to the sub plots. The experiments was replicated thrice. The unit plot size was 5m x 3m. The land was prepared by ploughing five times with country plough followed by laddering. Individual plot was prepared smoothly with spade before sowing. The land was fertilized with 100 kg N, 60 kg K20, 15 kg S and 5 kg Zn/ha through urea, muriate of potash, gypsum and zinc oxide, respectively. Phosphorus and boron were applied as per experimental specifications through triple superphosphate and boric acid, respectively. One third of urea and entire amount of other fertilizers were applied as basal during final land preparation. The remaining two-third of urea was top dressed in two equal splits at crown root initiation stage (29 days after sowing) and at shooting stage (46 days after sowing). Seeds were sown on December 9, 1996 in 20 em apart lines continuously. All intercultural operations were performed as a when necessary. Weeding was done twice at 28 days after sowing (DAS) and at 49 DAS. One irrigation was given at 24 DAS. Since there was a shower at 42 DAS further irrigation was not needed. The crop was harvested at full maturity on March 29, 1997. Harvested crop was then threshed, cleaned and sun dried properly. Data were recorded on different yield contributing characters, grain yield (14% moisture basis) and straw yield. Grain phosphorus and boron contents were also determined. All the data were compiled, tabulated and subjected to statistical analysis by MSTAT Program. The mean differences were adjudged by Duncan's Multiple Range Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).

Among the yield contributing characters studied only 1000-seed weight was significantly influenced by level of phosphorus while the other characters like plant height, total tiller/plant, spikelet/plant, spike length, florets/spike, effective spikelets/spike and seeds/spike were not significantly affected by level of phosphorus (Table 1). It was noticed that 1000-seed weight was recorded the highest (48.70 g) with 100 kg P205 ha; the highest level of phosphorus resulted in the lowest 1000-seed weight (46.31 g). Grain yield was significantly influenced by level of phosphorus. No. of florets/spike, seeds/spike and 1000-seed weight were significantly influenced by level of boron, while the other yield contributing characters were found independent of level of boron. Two kg 8/ha produced the maximum no. of florets/spike (52.59) which maintained similarity with those produced by 0 and 1 kg 8/ha; the highest level of boron produced the minimum no. of florets/spike (47.94).
