Influence of Cowdung, Nitrogen and Boron on Protein Content of Wheat

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agric.ultural University, Mymensingh during 1995-96 with a view to studying the influence of cowdung, nitrogen and boron on protein content of wheat. The study revealed that an increase in the rate of cowdung up to 15 t ha^-1 increased plant nitrogen content at anthesis, grain protein content and grain protein yield, but decreased nitrogen harvest index. Correlation coefficients of grain yield with grain protein content and grain protein yield were positive but that with nitrogen harvest index (NHI) was negative. Plant nitrogen content at anthesis, protein content, protein yield and boron content in grain at maturity increased while nitrogen harvest index decreased due to increasing levels of nitrogen up to 200 kg ha^-1. Application of 2 and 4 kg B ha^-1 produced higher and identical plant nitrogen content at anthesis than that of no boron application. Similarly, boron application gave higher grain protein content, grain boron content and grain protein yield over no boron application.

Objectives:

To evaluate the influence of cowdung, nitrogen and boron on protein content of wheat.

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during 1995-96 to study the effect of cowdung, nitrogen and boron on the grain protein content in wheat. The soil of the experimental field was sitly loam having pH 6.52. The experiment included four cowdung levels (0, 5, 10 and 15 t ha^-1 three nitrogen levels, (0, 100 and 200 kg ha-1 ) and three boron levels (0, 2 and 4 kg ha-1 A split-plot design was used for the experiment with cowdung in the main plot and the combination of nitrogen and boron in the subplot. The treatments were replicated three times. Seeds of wheat variety Kanchan were drilled on 20 November 1995 in 20 cm apart rows at a depth of 3-4 cm. Recommended doses of other nutrients (P, K and S @ 17, 40 and 12 kg ha^-1, respectively) were used except those under the treatment. Normal cultural practices were followed during the growing period of the crop. The crop was harvested at maturity and the grain and straw total nitrogen content were analyzed following semimicro-Kjeldahl method (AOAC, 1990). The above ground whole plant nitrogen content at anthesis was also analyzed. Total nitrogen percentage was expressed on dry matter weight basis.

Achievement/Findings:

The interaction between cowdung and nitrogen was significant only for GPC and PC grain, (mg) during grain filling stages. However, there was no significant effect for other interaction for any of the parameter under study. At 2 WAA, the highest GPC (16.26%) was produced by CD15xN200 while the lowest GPC (10.51%) was produced by CD0xN0. Irrespective of cowdung levels the effect of nitrogen was more prominent of GPC at this stage. Similar effect of nitrogen was also observed at 4 WAA but the concentration of grain protein was lower than that of 2 WAA irrespective of interactions. At maturity the highest GPC (15.96%) was observed in CD 10xN200 which was identical with CD5xN200 and CD15xN200 but higher than that for CD0xN200 (14.13%). The lowest GPC (10.19%) was exhibited by CD0xN0. Response of nitrogen at this stage was also superior to cowdung in respect of GPC. The results clearly showed that a positive relationship of grain yield of wheat with GPC, PC grain^-1, and GPY and a negative relationship with NHI under these three conditions of fertilization.
