Collection of Rice Germplasm from Hilly, Coastal, Haor and Other Areas of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The exploration and collection were done in the targeted 100 upazilas of 20 districts. The collection missions were able to collect directly from the field and major portion of the collections were done through the DAE personnel and seed net partners of BRRI. In addition, some collected samples were in field to germinate which were collected through DAE. It was noted that 371 samples were collected from hilly areas where only 93 accessions were preserved in BRRI genebank.

Objectives:

a. To collect cultivated and wild rice germplasm from unexplored areas especially from hilly, coastal, haor and other areas of Bangladesh. b. to document the collected rice germplasm for different uses.

Methodology:

Orientation training provided to SAAO and Seed Net partners of BRRI in the area where direct collection was not done. In case of direct collection locations were identified checking the previous collection records and filled up passport data and taking photographs of the crops habitats. The germination were sown in the pots/fields for rejuvenation. Only a few samples were characterized morphologically.
