The effects of seeding density, sulphur and boron on yield and protein content of wheat were studied at the. Agronomy Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during November 1997 to March 1998. Application of 20 kg S ha-1 produced higher grain yield and biological yield through higher grain number ear-1, 1000-grain weight and plant height. Grain protein and sulphur content and grain protein yield were increased with sulphur application. Due to the effect of sulphur, the grain yield was significantly and positively correlated with grain protein yield. Application of 2 kg B ha-1 produced higher plant height, grains ear-1', grain yield and biological yield than control (0 kg 8 ha- 1). Higher grain protein and boron content and grain protein yield were produced by 2 and 4 kg B ha-1 than control. At higher seeding density (220 kg ha-1 ), the production of higher number of ears m2 was compensated adequately to equalize yield by the production of additional grains ear-1 at lower seeding density (120 kg ha-1). Grain sulphur and boron content and nitrogen harvest index were higher at lower seeding density.

To study the effect of seeding density, sulphur and boron on yield and protein content of wheat.

An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during November 1997 to March 1998. The experimental site belongs to the Agro-Ecological Zone 9 of Bangladesh and the soil was silty loam having pH value of 6.52. The experiment included three seeding densities (120, 170 and 220 kg seed ha-1 two sulphur rates (0 and 20 kg ha-1) and three boron rates (0, 2 and 4 kg ha•Variety Kanchan was used in the experiment.A split-plot design was used with seeding density in the main plot and sulphur and boron combination in the sub-plot. The experiment was replicated three times. Seeds were drilled on 18 November 1997 in 20 em apart rows at a depth of 3-4 cm. Recommended doses of fertilizers were used except those under treatment and normal cultural practices were followed during the growing period of the crop. Mature grain and straw were analyzed for total nitrogen by micro-Kjeldahl method. Calculation for grain and straw protein were made as follows:Protein content (%): %N (DWB) x F (where, F = 5.83 for grain and 6.25 for straw) Grain protein yield (GPY): Grain yield x Grain protein content(%)Straw protein yield (SPY): Straw yield x Straw protein content(%) Data collected on different characters were statistically analyzed and the significance of mean differences was adjudged by Duncan's Multiple Range Test with the help of a computer package M-stat.

The number of ears m2 was increased significantly with increasing seeding densities. A seed rate of 220 kg ha-1 produced the highest number of ears m2 (357) which was significantly different from 170 and 120 kg seed ha-1 . In contrast with the number of ears m2 , number of grains ear-1 and 1000-grain weight exhibited the reverse trend of response with seeding densities. Both these traits gradually decreased with increasing seeding densities. The highest number of grains ear-1 (30.56) and 1000-grain weight (40.93g) were obtained from 120 kg seed ha-1 while the lowest from 220 kg seed ha-1 . The number of grains ear-1 and 1000-grain weight produced by 120 and 170 kg seed ha-1 were identical. The lowest seed rate had the highest number of days to maturity. Grain yield showed non significant response to different seeding densities. At higher seeding density, production of higher number of ears m2 was compensated adequately to equalize yield by the production of more grains ear-1 and 1000-grain weight at lower seeding density. But harvest index was higher with lower seeding density. From the results, it is clear that the use of higher seed rate might not be judicious from the viewpoint of grain yield.Interrelationship of characters influenced by seeding density, sulphur and boron were studied. Significant positive correlation coefficient values were observed for grain yield with PC grain-1 and GPY. Though seeding density had-1 no significant effect on grain yield and protein yield, moreover, increasing level of seeding density had a negative influence on all the correlating characters, such a unidirectional effect resulted in positive and significant correlation. Positive effect of sulphur on grain yield, PC grain- 1 and GPY resulted in significant positive correlation of grain yield with PC grain-1, and GPY. As influenced by boron, grain yield was significantly and positively correlated with PC grain-1 and GPY. Positive effect of boron on the correlating characters resulted in such significant positive relationship.
