A mixed cropping of aus rice with sesame at different seeding ratios and nitrogen rates was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory of the Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh during the period from March to August 2000. Seed yields of both aus rice and sesame were decreased significantly in mixed cropping mainly due to their lesser plant population. The highest net return (15499 Tk.) over variable cost was obtained in 75% sesame+ 25% aus rice with 100 kg N ha•', but the highest benefit-cost ratio (2.17) was recorded in 75% sesame + 25% aus rice with 60 kg N ha•'. Therefore, mixed cropping of aus rice with sesame exhibited better performance in respect of productivity and economic return in comparison to the sole cropping of each crop. Mixed cropping of aus rice (cv. BR24) with sesame (cv. T6)  appeared as the promising mixed cropping practice in kharif season in terms of productivity and economic return.

to see the yield performance of aus rice with sesame in mixed cropping system compared to their sole crops and to assess their proper seeding ratio and nitrogen rate and to find out the interaction between mixed cropping of aus rice with sesame.

The experiment was conducted at Agronomy Field Laboratory of the Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh during the period from March to August 2000 to assess the proper seeding ratio of aus rice and sesame and rate in mixed cropping practices for maximum out-turn. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block design with four replications. Aus rice cv. BR24  and sesame cv. T6 were used for this experiment. Five mixed cropping combinations with varying seeding ratios viz., sole rice (100 kg ha-1) coded as T 1 , sole sesame (9 kg ha-1 coded as T2 , 75% aus rice + 25% sesame coded as T3, 50% aus rice + 50% sesame coded as T4 and 25% aus rice + 75% sesame coded as T5 and three nitrogen rates viz., 0 kg N ha-1(N0), 60 kg N ha-1  (N1) 0 and 100 kg N ha-1 (N2) were included in the experiment. There were 60 unit plots in the experiment each measuring 4.0mx2.5m. The land was prepared by repeated ploughing and cross ploughing and all the weeds and stubbles were removed from the experimental plots. Triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and zinc sulphate were applied at final land preparation at the rate of 90-70-60-10 kg ha-1 , respectively. Nitrogen was applied as per treatments. One-third of urea was applied as basal dose. Rest of the urea was top dressed in two equal installments at 20 days after sowing (DAS) and at panicle initiation stage of aus rice.

Yield and yield attributes of aus rice varied significantly due to different seeding ratios. The highest number of plants m2 , tallest plants (88.68cm), highest number of grains panicle, maximum number of sterile spikelet panicle highest grain and straw yields were observed in sole aus rice. It was observed that grain and straw yields and their components of aus rice were markedly reduced when seeding ratios of aus rice decreased due to inclusion of sesame at various seeding ratios. However, panicle length and number of effective tillers plant-1 in 75% sesame + 25% aus rice were at par with sole aus rice. Weight of 1000 grains of aus rice remained unaffected due to mixed cropping with sesame. The highest grain yield (1.81 t ha-1 ) was recorded in sole aus rice. The highest grain yield (1.81 t ha-1) was associated with the highest number of plant m2 , maximum number of grains panicle-1  and the highest number of effective tillers plant-1. The aus rice yield decreased significantly for each successive decrease in seeding ratios. The seeding ratio of 75% sesame+ 25% aus rice yielded only 0.73 t ha-1 of aus rice. The reduction of rice yield in mixed cropping was mainly due to lesser plant population of aus rice when grown as mixed cropping with sesame. From the results of the experiments, it is found that the yield and yield components of both aus rice and sesame were severely affected due to mixed cropping practices compared to their sole cropping practices. But, from the economic analysis, it was found that highest gross return and benefit cost ratio were recorded from 75% sesame + 25% aus rice mixed crop combination and the highest benefit-cost ratio was recorded with 75% sesame + 25% aus rice at 60 kg N ha-1. It may be concluded that 75% sesame + 25% aus rice is the best seeding ratio for successful mixed cropping of aus rice with sesame at 60 kg N ha-1.
