The experiment was conducted at Biotechnology Laboratory, Bangladesh Sugarcane Research Institute (BSRI). Sugarcane bagasse supplemented with wheat bran was evaluated to find out the growth and yield of mushroom. The mycelia running rate, days required to complete of full running of mycelia, days required for the initiation of primordia to harvesting, number of primordia, number of fruiting body, effective fruiting body, plius diameter, thickness of plius, stalk diameter, stalk length, fresh and dry yield of oyster mushroom were greatly influenced by different combinations of sugarcane bagasse with wheat bran as substrate. The highest yield (120.00g) and return (Tk 12.00) were obtained from the treatment of 80% of sugarcane bagasse supplemented with 20% wheat bran. The highest mycelia running rate was observed in the treatment where sugarcane bagasse alone was used as substrate. The minimum duration for mushroom production found in the combination of 90% sugarcane bagasse and 10% wheat bran. The results revealed that the 80% sugarcane bagasse supplemented with 20% wheat bran and 90% sugarcane bagasse supplemented with 10% wheat bran are the best combinations of sugarcane bagasse and wheat bran for the growing of oyster mushroom and these are economically viable.

To investigate the effects of sugarcane bagasse, wheat bran along with sugarcane bagasse on the growth and yield of oyster mushroom.

Oyster mushroom cultivar P02 (Pleurotus ostreatus) was used as experimental material. For the production of mushroom sugarcane bagasse supplemented with wheat bran was used as follows: T0 = Sugarcane bagasse alone, T1 = Sugarcane bagasse (60%) + wheat bran (40%), T2 = Sugarcane bagasse (70%) + wheat bran (30%), T3 = Sugarcane bagasse (80%) + wheat bran (20%), T4 = Sugarcane bagasse (90%) + wheat bran (10%). The experiment was laid out following Complete Randomized Design (CRD) design with three replications. To obtain pure culture, tissue culture method was followed using PDA (Potato Dextrose Agar) medium. The substrate for mother culture was prepared using 1000g (66.33%) of sugarcane bagasse, 500g (33.33%) well dried wheat bran and 3.0g of CaC03. The spawn packets were prepared using sugarcane bagasse and wheat bran according to treatments. For 1000g substrate 2 g of CaC03 was added. Sterilization, inoculation of mycelia, preparation of mother culture, spawn packets and culture of spawn packets for mushroom production were followed according to method. Data were recorded on mycelia running rate in spawn packet, days required to primordia initiation, number of primordia per packet, number of effective primordia per packet, percentage of effective primordia, days required to primordia initiation to harvest, days required from inoculation to harvest, thickness and diameter of pileus, length and diameter of stalk, biological yield, dry weight and cost benefit for mushroom production. Recorded data were analyzed statistically to find out variation resulting from experimental treatments. Treatment mean was calculated and analysis of variances of characters was performed by F-test.
