Factors Affecting Selection Rate at Seedling Stage of Sugarcane Breeding

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment on two factors - breeders and different cross combinations affecting selection rate at seedling stage of sugarcane breeding was conducted at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University during 1998-1999 cropping season. Among the breeders, a wide range of variation (21 - 61 %) in respect of selection rate in original seedling was observed. It is evident from the variation that selector affects selection rate. This broad variation in selection rate is due to a wide freedom given to selectors in respect of choosing plant type and habit, vigour, stalk size, and other characters. Different cross combinations also affected selection rate. The highest number of selection (130) was recorded in cross number 4 and the lowest number (22) was found in cross number 10. All breeders showed strong agreement in selecting better ones and disagreement in selecting poor types in respect of cane yield.

Objectives:

To observe that how the selectors and different cross combinations exert influence on selection rate at early stage of sugarcane breeding.

Methodology:

The location of the site was at 24.000N latitude and 90.250E longitude with an elevation of 8.4 meter from sea level. One hundred sixty seedlings from each of the 10 intervarietal crosses namely I 123-84 x Co 640, CP 44-155 x Co 1148, Isd 16 x NSM, 1327-86 x I 226-83, Co 1148 x CP 44-101, Co 640 x CP 50-5, Co 1148 x Co 631,1281-85 x CP 50-5, Isd 16 x CP 44-101 and Isd 28 x CP 44-154 were transplanted in the field during November 1998 according to method followed by Bangladesh Sugarcane Research Institute, Ishurdi, Pabna. A spacing of one miter between rows and 60 cm between stools within row were maintained. Standard variety was planted after every eight seedlings for getting an indication of soil fertility and Brix (%) variation but not for comparison purpose, since the standard was raised from cuttings but the experimental seedlings were from true seed. Irrigation, fertilization and intercultural operations were done as and when required. At late November, three sugarcane breeders from Bangladesh Sugarcane Research Institute, Ishurdi, Pabna independently evaluated each stool according to his perception how it would be as a commercial variety. Evaluation was made on the basis of comparison of seedlings with one another. During selection, breeders considered different aspects like plant type and habit, vigour, stalk number per stool and stalk diameter, solidness of stalk, tasselling habit, erectness of canopy, shooting of buds, existence of aerial roots, growth split, bulging eyes, incidence of diseases specially red rot etc. Seedlings considered good in these aspects were cut to check the pipe and pithiness. After thorough visual evaluation, each of the breeders selected the stools crosswise for further evaluation in the next clonal stage. After harvesting, each of the selected stools was designated by their respective cane weight.

Achievement/Findings:

The results indicate the existence of strong agreement among all three breeders in selecting better ones and show strong disagreement in selecting the poor types. The results also show that there should be a reasonably good agreement between two or more selectors working independently. It is occasionally cited in literature that evaluation of sugarcane at seedling stage have little value because they depend on so heavily on whim of one particular selector. The information indicated that the single stool selection is not entirely whimsical at least with the seedling showing better performance.
