The field  experiment was conducted  at  the Regional Agricultural Research Station. Rahmotpur, Barisal during the rabi season of 2001-2002 and 2002-2003 to examine the effects of' different levels of' sulphur (S) on growth, S content and uptake by onion plant. The experimental  results showed that S levels had the significant effect on plant growth  in terms  of  plant height, number of leaves/plant,  pseudostem length and  diameter,  horizontal  &  vertical  diameter of onion  bulb  and  total  dry matter weight. The S con rent and uptake  were also significantly affected  by different  levels of S. Application of 75 kg S/ha gave significantly  the highest  weight of total dry matter which contributed to the maximum  yield of onion bulb. The same treatment (S 75 kg/ha) also gave significantly  the highest value in respect of'S content and uptake in onion  plant. Therefore,  considering  the soil fertility in the Southern  region of Bangladesh,  60 to 75 kg S/ha  can be  applied   to  the  onion  crop  for  its  proper growth  and  maximum  bulb  yield  but  further application ofS  may cause toxicity in the soil along with yield reduction

To study the effects  of sulphur  on plant growth,  sulphur  content  and uptake  by onion  plant.

The experiment was conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Rahmatpur, Barisal during rahi seasons of two consecutive years from 2001-2002 to 2002-2003. The  experimental soil belongs to the Ganges Tidal Floodplain Alluvium Tract under AEZ-13. Prior to experimentation, composite soil   samples (0-15 cm depth) were collected from the selected fields for determining its   nutrient status. The soil  analytical results showed that the initial availability of Mg,  K and Zn nutrients  in soil  were  above  the critical  levels  but the availability of Ca,  NH4-N,  P and S were  below critical levels. The experiment was   laid   out   in randomized   complete block design   (RCBD) with four replications. The  unit plot size was 3 m x 4 m. Eight  levels  of  sulphur  (So, S15,  S3o, S45, S6o, S75, S9o and S10s  kg /ha)  were  taken  as treatment while N100  Pso K1oo kg/ha .and  Cow  dung  5t/ha  were  used as a blanket  dose.  The 45 days old onion seedlings (var.  BARI   Piaz-1) were transplanted on 28-30 December in 2001 and 2002. The   plant spacing was  20 cm  x  I0 cm.  Irrigation, weeding and mulching were done as per requirement of the crop for its proper growth.  As a prevention   measure of  cutworm  (Agrotis  ypsilon),  Furadan  3 G @ 20 kg/ha  was applied  into  the  soil. Similarly, Rovral 50 WP @  3 g/litre  water was sprayed for controlling purple blotch disease of onion caused by Alternaria   porri. The flower stalks were nipped off for stopping  the bolting in onion plant whenever they appeared in the plots. Plant samples were collected from each plot at 35, 50, 65 and 80 DAT for collecting field and periodical  data regarding different growth parameters of onion plant.  The plant samples were first air-dried and thereafter oven dried at 65° C for 48 hours. The  samples   were  then  finely grinded using  a wiley  mill  with  stainless contact points  to pass  through  a 60-mesh   sieve  and  were  stored  in sealed  polythene bags  for  S determination. The S concentration 111 the digest was estimated turbidimetrically by spectrophotometer using 420 nm wavelengths. The crop was harvested on 4-7 April  in 2002 and 2003  when  80% of the plants showed maturity symptoms and yield  data  were taken plot wise. Then all the collected data were analyzed statistically  by using MSTAT-C computer software and means  were separated followed  by Duncan's   Multiple  Range Test.
