An experiment was conducted at the Multi Location Testing (MLT) site, Sunamgonj under Estern surrna-kushiyara floodplain (AEZ-20) during 2007-09 to evaluate the effect of Urea Super Granule (USG) on the growth and yield of tomato. There were five treatments viz. T1: =recommended N dose as prilled urea (PU), T2 =recommended N dose as USG, T3 = 10% less than recommended dose of N as USG, T4 = 20% less than recommended dose of N as USG, and T5 = farmers practice (average of 20 farmers N dose used as PU) used in this experiment. Results revealed that yield and yield attributes of tomato significantly responded to application of USG. The highest fruit yields (81.89 and 80.55 t ha-1) were obtained from the recommended N dose as USG followed by USG 10% less than recommended dose of N (80.06 and 79.43 t ha-1) during 2007-08 and 2008-09, respectively. The treatments T3 and T4 also showed to be more effective over PU and 10- 20% nitrogenous fertilizer could be saved by using USG instead of traditional PU. Economic analysis revealed that the treatment T2 was found profitable in terms of higher gross returns as well as BCR.

1. To evaluate the effect of USG on the growth and yield of tomato,

2. To compare the effectiveness of USG over existing practice (PU),

3. To observe the farmers perception on USG application in Tomato crop.

The experiment was conducted in the medium highland of Multi Location Testing (MLT) site, Sunamgonj during the two consecutive years in rabi season of 2007-08 and 2008-09 under AEZ- 20 (Estern surma-kushiyara floodplain) to evaluate the effect of Urea Super Granule (USG) application on the growth and yield of tomato. After selecting the site, a composite soil sample (0- 15 cm depth) was collected and analyzed. The initial nutrient status of the experimental soil was presented. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized complete block (RCB) designed with six (6) dispersed replications, with unit plot size of 6 m x 5 m. Seedlings of 30-34 days old of hybrid tomato (Var. Epok) were transplanted on 23 November 2007 and 20 November 2008 maintaining spacing of 75 cm x 60 cm. There were five treatments used in this experiment and these were: T1- recommended N dose as prilled urea (PU), T2 -recommended N dose as USG, T3 - 10% less than recommended dose of N as USG, T4 -20% less than recommended dose of N as USG, and T5 - farmers practice (average of 20 farmers) N dose used as PU. All fertilizers and 50% of MoP were applied during the final land preparation except PU and USG and mixed thoroughly with soil. USG was applied at 15 DAT (days after transplanting) as ring method, 10 cm apart from plant stalk and 8 cm depth covering with soil. PU was applied as ring method in three equal splits one each at 15, 30 and 45 DAT, respectively. The rest 50% of MoP fertilizer was also applied following ring method at 15 DAT for all the treatments. Two hand weedings were done at 30 and 42 DAT. Pruning of side suckers (2 times), irrigation and plant protection measures were carried out as and when required. The fruits of tomato were harvested after full maturity on 8 February-15 March. The data on yield contributing characters were recorded from five randomly selected plants in each plot. Measurement of yield data was collected from each plot and expressed as t ha-1. The collected data were analyzed statistically following the ANOVA technique with the help of MSTAT- C software. The mean differences among the treatment means were adjudged by Least Square Difference (LSD). Cost and return of all inputs and outputs were noted down and economic analysis of different treatments was done for benefit cost ratio (BCR). Gross return was calculated from two years mean yield of tomato.

On the basis of two years results, it can be concluded that urea super granule had positive impact on tomato productivity. Using USG, on an average, 10-20% less N could be saved as compared with that of normal dose of N used as PU that may lead to minimize the crisis of fertilizers and also reduce the farmers cost of production effectively. Hence, the rate of N@ 92-116 kg ha-1 in the form of USG along with other fertilizer could be recommended for the cultivation of tomato in the medium highland of Estern Surma-Kushiyara Floodplain (AEZ-20) of Sylhet region.
