Bangladesh Rural Advancement Council (BRAC) started dairy development program in the northern part of the country with a view to develop dairy industry in the area to help poverty alleviation, income generation and food security of the rural peoples. It established nine (9) chilling plants in the area organizing small farmers into Milk Producers' Organizations (MPO). The farmers under the MPOs were supported with input (artificial insemination (AI) service, vaccination, deworming, forage cultivation) supply and marketing of milk. The present study was undertaken with the objectives to assess the impact of BRAC dairy program on farmers income, change incom position of smallholder dairies and productivity of dairy cows. Fifty farmers from three MPOs out of total 30 MPOs of each upazila participating in the dairy program for the last three years during 2000 to 2002 were selected randomly for collection of data. Marketing and other upports' to smallholder dairies helped to increase the number of cows per farm and resulted in shifting of dairies with 1 to 2 cows/farm to dairies with 3 to 5 or >5 cows/farm. The average number of crossbred or local cow per farm increased significantly (p<0.05) from 1.53 or 1.35, respectively to 2.13 or 1.70, respectively. This has increased average daily milk yield per family significantly (p<0.01) from 2.75 litres to 6.22litres. The higher milk yield per family was also attributed to increased milk production from a unit cow. The higher milk production per family significantly (p<0.00l) increased annual income (BD Taka) per farm from Tk.807.00 to Tk.170 1.00. From the above results and discussion it may be concluded that facilitating dairy farmers with marketing of milk and supply of inputs attracted them to increase their farm size by increasing the number of cows of both local and crossbred genotypes. BRAC dairy program helped to increase milk yield per cow, average daily milk production per farm and annual income from a smallholder dairy.

To assess the impact of dairy program on farmers income, change in structures of smallholder dairies and productivity of dairy cows.

The study was conducted in Shibganj upazila (sub-district) of Bogra district, and Kalai and Panchbibi upazilas of Joypurhat district. Fifty farmers from an MPO out of total 30 MPOs in each upazila participating in the dairy program for the last three years (2000-2001) were selected randomly for collection of data on the types and number of animals in their dairies, daily milk yield per cow or per farm and income per family. The data were collected once at the beginning of the program and again after three years continuation of the program. A total of 149 farmers were under the study and one was dropped due to some problems. A set of questionnaires were prepared and pre-tested and was used for data collection on the variables described above related to smallholder dairies and farm economy. Smallholder dairies at different distances (1.0 to 8.0 Kilometer) from chilling plants were selected for data collection for minimizing the effects of differences in distances that may affect milk collection and development of dairies. Data were collected through interviewing farmers and recorded in the questionnaire. Farmers who had at least one dairy cow were selected to include in the MPOs. They were trained on dairy farming and vaccines and fodder seeds or cuttings were given free of cost. Farmers reared their animals both in grazing and stall- feeding conditions and termed as semi-intensive dairy system. Data collected on different variables were inserted in the computer using Microsoft Excel software and impact of the program on dairies or farm economy were compared using student/s t- test and response differences in productivity of farms and family income of the dairy farmers with different number of cows were analyzed in a simple design and compared using Duncan's Multiple Range test.
