Two experiments were conducted consecutively at the Agronomy Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University. Mymensingh during the period from March to December 1996 to study the effect of relay cropping of Sesbania rostrata on the performance of aus rice (cv. BR2) and its incorporation (in the soil) effects on the yield of subsequent transplant aman rice (cv. Nizershail). The experiment with aus rice consisted the follcwing treatments: control (no Sesbania). sowing seeds of Sesbania in between two rows of rice and after two rows interval of rice, transplanting seedlings of Sesbabnia in between two rows of rice and after two rows interval of rice, planting cutting of Sesbania in between two rows of rice and after two rows interval of rice. Different amounts of green biomass (no Sesbania biomass, 5.20, 5.31. 6.89, 8.21, 10.45 and 11.46 t ha-1 obtained from different treatments of aus rice experiment, were included as the treatments of transplant aman rice. Relay cropping of Sesbania rostrata with aus had no significant effect on the growth and yield contributmg characters of aus rice. In the transplant aman rice length of panicle, grains panicle- 1 and gra.n yield increased significantly due to incorporation of different amounts of green biomass in the soil. The highest grain yield (4.06 t ha-1 ) was obtained with the incorporation of 11.46 t ha-1 of green biomass and the lowest (3.29 t ha-1 ) was obtained from the control (no Sesbania biomass).

To see the effect of relay cropping of Sesbania rostrata in aus rice and its incorporation (in the soil) effect on the performance of subsequent transplant aman rice.

The trial comprised of two experments. Experiment 1: The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with four replications. The experiment consisted the following treatments: control (no Sesbania), sowing seeds of Sesbania in between two rows of rice and after two rows interval of rice, transplanting seedlings of Sesbania in between two rows of rice and after two rows interval of rice , planting cuttings of Sesbania in between two rows of rice and after two rows interval of rice. The experiment land was prepared well by plouhing and laddering. Before last ploughing the land was fertilized with TSP,MP, gypsum and zinc sulphate at the rate of 90, 40, 60 and 10 kg ha-1 , respectively. Urea was top dressed in three equal splits at the rate of 135 kg ha -1 at 25,47 and 67 days after sowing of rice seeds. Seed of aus rice was sown at the rate of 80 kg ha-1 on 28 March 1996 in 25 cm apart lines. Weeding and other intercultural operations were done uniformly in all the plots. Seeds of Sesbania rostrata at the rate of 35 kg ha-1 were sown in the aus rice plots on 16 May 1996 (48 days after sowing of aus rice). Seedlings and cuttings of 30 cm long Sesbania were transplanted and planted, respectively, on 24 June 1996 (86 days after sowing of aus rice) before panicle emergence of rice plants. Data collected for Sesbania rostrata were number of Sesbania plot-1 , survival rate and weight of Sesbania rostrata at the time of incorporation. For rice, data were collected on plant height, total tillers hill-1 lenght of panicle (cm), number of grains panicle-1 , sterile spikelets panicle- 1 , 1000-grain weight (g), grain yield (t ha-1) and straw yield (t ha-1 ). Experiment 2: Nizershail, a local improved variety of transplant aman rice, was used as test crop. Different amounts of green biomass of Sesbania obtained from relay cropping with aus rice were treated as experimental treatments. The treatments were control (no Sesbania biomass), 5.20, 5.34, 6.89, 8.21, 10.45 and 11.46 t ha-1green biomass of Sesbania . Seeds of Nizershail were sown on 23 July 1996 in a seed bed for raising seedlings. Before last ploughing the experimental land was fertilizer with TSP, MP, gypsum and zinc sulphate at the rate of 90, 40, 60 and 10 kg ha-1 , respectively. All the collected data were analyzed statistically and mean differences were adjudged by Duncan's New Multiple Range Test. The soil samples of experimental plots were collected after 15 days of incorporation of Sesbania rostrata green biomass and after harvesting of transplant aman rice for the determination of soil p , organic matter and total nitrogen.
