Two different field experiments were conducted at Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS), Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Jamalpur during two consecutive rabi seasons of 2006-07 and 2007-08 with the objectives to study the effectiveness of rhizobial inoculum and chemical fertilizers on groundnut. The experiment was designed in randomized complete block (RCB) having 4 replications in each treatment. The variety BARI Badam-6 and peat based rhizobial inoculum (BARI RAh-801) @ I.5 kg ha-1 was used for the experiment. There were six treatments (T1: NPKSZn, T2: PKSZn + Inoculum, T3: PKSZn, T4: N, T5: Inoculum, T6: Control). The inoculated plants gave higher number of nodule and nodule weight compared to other treatments. Rhizobium inoculum with chemical fertilizers except nitrogen produced significantly higher number of nodules, nodule weight, number of matured pods plant-1 ,100-kernel weight, 100-nut weight, kernel weight of 100-nut and nut yield of groundnut. The highest nut yield (2.70 t ha-1 in 2007 and 3.15 t ha-1 in 2008) was obtained with T2 treatment. Only N and only inoculum gave similar nut yield. Shelling percentage was non significant in both the year. Benefit cost ratio analysis revealed that only inoculum was more profitable than other chemical fertilizers for groundnut production. Inoculum can be used instead of nitrogenous chemical fertilizers for groundnut.

To study the effectiveness of rhizobial inoculum and chemical fertilizers on nodulation, yield performance and economic benefit of groundnut of Bangladesh. 

The experiment was designed in randomized complete block (RCB) having 4 replications in each treatment. There were six treatments (T1: NPKSZn, T2: PKSZn + Inoculum, T3: PKSZn, T4: N, T5: Inoculum, T6: Control). Rhizobial inoculum (BARI RAh-801) was used @ I.5 kg ha-1. Chemical fertilizers @ 100 kg N ha-1 from urea, 22 kg P ha-1 from tripple superphosphate, 42 kg K ha-1 from muriate of potash, 40 kg S ha-1 from gypsum and 5 kg Zn ha-1 from ZnSO4 were used. Peat based rhizobial inoculum (BARI RAh-801) was used containing 108 cells g-1 inoculum. Groundnut (var. BARI Badam 6) was sown on 26 November 2006 and 05 November 2007. The unit plot size was 5 m x 3 m. During the course of the experiment, growth and development of plants in the fields were carefully observed. Five plants along with roots were collected at 50% flowering stage from each unit plot and dry weight of shoots and nodules including nodule number were recorded. The crop was harvested on 05 June 2007 and 16 May 2008, and the harvested area was 2 m x 3 m. Data on matured pods plant-1, seeds pod-1, 100-nut weight, 100- kernel weight, kernel weight of 100-nut, nut yield and shelling percentage were taken. Ten plants were considered to collect 100-kernel weight and kernel weight of 100-nut, and 100-nut weight was recorded from harvested groundnut. All data were analyzed statistically. Chemical fertilizers (PKSZn) with inoculum except nitrogen produced the highest yield (2.70 t ha-1 in 2007 and 3.15 t ha-1 in 2008) of groundnut. Treatment T4 (only N) and T5 (only inoculum) gave identical nut yields in both the years. Considering benefit cost analysis, the inoculum was more profitable compared to other chemical fertilizers. Nitrogen is a costly chemical fertilizer while rhizobial inoculum is a natural biofertilizer which has no adverse effects on soil health and environment. So, only inoculum is more suitable for poor farmers for groundnut production and nitrogenous fertilizer can be substituted by rhizobial inoculum.
