Polybag Technique for Potato and Watermelon Crops and Development of a Rice Based Cropping Pattern

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted in the farmers' field to evaluate the productivity and profitability of polybag cultured potato and watermelon crops . The productivity of potato and watermelon with polybag technique resulted 19% and 12% yield reduction, respectively, in comparison to direct planting method. The net return derived from the polybag technique of potato culture was 102% higher and that of the watermelon was slightly lower than that found with direct planting. A new cropping pattern, T. Aus rice- T. aman rice (early variety) -polybag potato+ polybag watermelon (relayed) was developed by utilizing the benefit of polybag technique. The emerged pattern provided higher profitability than the farmers existing ones.

Objectives:

To observe the agro-economic performance of polybag planted potato and watermelon crops through a new cropping pattern, T. Aus rice - T. Aman rice (early)- Potato + Watermelon (Relayed); and also to compare the new cropping pattern with the existing farmers' patterns.

Methodology:

The field study was conducted at Kazirshimla village under Trishal thana of Mymensingh district during October 1989 through May 1990. The study consisted of two successive trials: polybag planted potato and polybag planted watermelon relayed with potao. One thousand polybags ( 10 cm x 7.5 cm) were filled with compost and kept in a net house of the Department of Agronomy, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. The whole seed tubers (28-35mm size) of the variety Diamant were planted at a 6 cm depth in the compost of polybag on 10 October 1989. Frequent watering was done to keep the compost moist. The tubers sprouted in 7 to 10 days and seedlings were allowed to grow for a period of 25 days to became ready for planting in the field. The polybag planted potato was harvested at maturity on 26-29 December 1989 whereas the direct planted tubers were harvested when matured on 20-24 January 1990. One thousand polybags (10 cm x 7.5 cm) were filled with compost and kept in a net house of the Department of Agronomy, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. The watermelon seeds (Variety Top Yield) were soaked in water for 24 hours and then planted one seed in each polybag at a 4cm depth on 30 November 1989. The compost was kept moist with slight irrigation upto germination of seed. Irrigations were applied as necessary to keep the soil moist and to avoid moisture stress. Intercultural operations were done and insects were managed in watermelon crop through applying Nogos @ 1 .2 litre/ha . Flowering started in March and fruiting in April. Harvesting was completed by 4 May. Data Record and Economic Analysis: The data on yield, market price and cost of cultivation were recorded for both the crops. The economic analyses were done according to local market price of inputs and products.
