The capture fisheries comprising the beels and other depressions have an important bearing in the livelihoods and nutrition of the people of Bangladesh but the fishery is rapidly declining because of complex natural and anthropogenic causes. A year- long investigation was done from November 04 - October '05 on the ecology and incidence of diseases in two perennial beels, Kalian and Haily from Fulpur, Mymensingh. The major water quality parameters viz., temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, alkalinity and ammonia were recorded. Density and abundance of fish species in the beels were investigated with simultaneous inspection for clinical signs and identification of diseases in the fishes. The different water quality parameters were within the normal range, the alkalinity values had inverse relation with temperature, being higher in the winter months. A total of 21 and 22 fish species were collected from the Kahan and Haily beels respectively with the number of specimens in all the species ranging between 1- 52 and 1- 69 in the two beels respectively throughout the study period. EUS, parasitic infestations and bacterial infection with a variety of clinical signs were identified in the fishes of both the beels. Trichodina spp, Apisoma spp. and Dactylogyrus spp. were identified from fish of Kalian beel while Trichodirui spp, OnctyloglJrus spp. Gyrodactylus spp. were identified from Haily beel. With such low species abundance and incidence of various diseases, it was imperative that judicious efforts should be made for improving the management of the beels.

  1. To determine the temperature, pH, DO, alkalinity and ammonia for a year in the two beels.
  2. To determine the abundance of fish species and abundance of individuals within a species in the beels .
  3. To investigated with simultaneous inspection for clinical signs and identification of diseases in the fishes.

A year- long study was carried out on the ecology and incidence of diseases in two perennial beels, Kalian and Haily from Fulpur, Mymensingh. The Kalian beeI was 71 acre with the depth range of 10- 30 ft. It does have a connection to a nearby small river; has an extended shore areas covered with water hyacinth. The area gets reduced to 45 acre in the dry season. The Haily beeI was 65 acre with the depth of 30 ft. It also has an extended shore area covered with aquatic vegetation and considerably reduces in area during dry season. Random sampling on water quality parameters and fishes for disease investigation was done monthly. Samples of fishes were collected by cast net. The number and length of the fishes were recorded. For pathological consideration the fishes were observed with naked eye and at least 10 fish were carried to the laboratory for detailed study as follows: For clinical purposes information on fish behavior, occurrence of mass mortality, seasonality, mortality pattern etc. were recorded. Ecto- parasites were identified by eye observation and microscopic examination of slime and gill. For endo- parasitic study, body cavity and intestine were opened and thoroughly examined following a standard method. Bacterial samples from affected skin, gills, liver and kidney were inoculated onto TSA agar plates and identified. Fungal investigation was carried out by applying quick method of fungal identification by squash preparation and examination of infected tissue. Fish with EUS type lesions were confirmed using a standard histological method. Monthly random sampling was also made for water quality parameters viz., temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, alkalinity and ammonia. The parameters were recorded on the spot by using water quality test kit (HACH). Training workshops were conducted for building awareness in the stakeholder groups of the beels.
