Factors Associated with Reception of Information on Planting Method in Sugarcane Cultivation

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The purpose of this study was to determine the extent of reception of information on planting method by the farmers in sugarcane cultivation and to explore the relationships between selected characteristics namely age, education, farm size, agricultural knowledge, income, extension contact, organizational participation, cosmopolite ness and innovative ness of the farmers and their extent of information reception. Data were collected by interview method from a sample of 105 out of 1100 sugarcane growers of Kushna Union of Jhenaidah district in 1992. The relationship of the selected characteristics of sugarcane growers with their reception of information were statistically significant between age and education and extension method in sugarcane cultivation.

Objectives:

(i) To determine the extent of information received by the farmers on planting methods and inter cropping in sugarcane cultivation,

(ii) To describe the selected characteristics of farmers and

(iii) To explore the relationships of the selected characteristics of the farmers with their extent of reception · of information on sugarcane cultivation.

Methodology:

The population of this study consisted 1100 sugarcane growers of 15 villages of Kushna Union of Jhenaidah district. Ten villages were selected randomly from the 15 villages of that union. The ten villages had 700 sugarcane growers. Fifteen per cent of the sugarcane growers of each of then village were selected randomly. Thus, a sample of 105 sugarcane growers constituted the sample for this study. Data were collected during 14 March to 16 April 1992.Extent of reception of information of the sugarcane growers in planting method on sugarcane cultivation was the principal focus in this study. Ten useful information related to adoption of planting method in sugarcane cultivation were used to determine the extent to 2 for one information and 0 to 20 for ten information of planting method, 0 indicating reception and 20 indicating.very high reception of information on planting method. The categories developing this respect were lo w, moderate and high. The extent of reception of information on planting method was the dependent variable.Independent variables included nine characteristics of the sugarcane growers,namely, age, education, farm size, agricultural knowledge, income, extension contact, organizational participation, cosmopolite ness and innovative ness. Qualitative data were converted into quantitative data by means of suitable scoring wherever necessary. Chi square analysis was conducted to explore the relationships between the dependent and independent variables.

Achievement/Findings:

The findings indicate that a large proportion (50 per cent) of the sugarcane growers were in low category compared to 45 per cent being middle and 5 per cent high in extension contact. It showed that most of the sugarcane growers did not have adequate contact with the various extension media (information sources). The average extension contact score was also low. This contact might cause hindrance to rapid dissemination of improved practices in respect of sugarcane cultivation.Organizational participation score of the sugarcane growers ranged from 1 to 9 with an average of 2.06. Findings of this study indicate that most of the sugarcane growers (75 per cent) had low participation compared to 14 per cent medium and 11 per cent high participation in organization may cause a factorable disposition among the growers towards information sources. But the findings revealed that maximum growers were in low organizational participation category.
