Impact of Furrow Irrigation on Rice Production

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Field experiments were conducted in the boro seasons of 1981. 1982 and 1983 to determine the impact of furrow irrigation on rice production. Among the different furrow irrigation methods, such as, 3, 5 and plant rows in between furrows, the highest grain yield and water use efficiency were observed with the 3- row design. The yield difference between normal flooding and 3-row irrigation in between furrows was not significant. About 40-60% irrigation water could be saved by using the 3-row furrow irrigation method compared with the conventional flooding method of irrigation.

Objectives:

A study was a undertaken on irrigation water saving in the dry season.

Methodology:

Field experiments were conducted at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) farm, Gazipur in Boro 1981, '82 and '83. The soil of the experimental field was clay loam with pH 6.5 and 1.2% of organic matter. There were 4 treatments as follows: 3 rows in between furrows (11) 5 rows in between furrows (12) 7 rows in between furrows (13) Conventional flooding (5-7 cm) (14) The furrows (20 X 15 cm) were constructed with the help of a country plough, rainfall was measured in the field by a rain gauge. V-nothch for 11 and plastic bucket for 12, 13 and 14 were used to measure the volume of irrigation water applied. In 1983, two additional treatments, viz., 1 m² and 2 m² grids, were included to compare with furrow irrigation. Each treatment was replicated 3 times in a randomized complete block design. In between treatments plots, levees were constructed for better water management. BR3 was used as the test variety. Fertilizers were applied at the rate of 80, 60, 40 kg of N, P₂0₅, K₂ 0, per ha respectively. One third of the N and all P and K were applied as basal. The remaining N was: applied in 2 equal splits at an interval of 30 days. Weeding and insecticide application were done as and when necessary. Yield data were recorded and statistically analysed. Total volume of water required for each treatment were recorded as the average of three replications.

Achievement/Findings:

On the basis of the results of this experiment it is concluded that furrow irrigation (3 rows in between furrows) may be a good alternative to the conventional flood irrigation method for Boro rice in respect of grain yield and water use efficiency. By practicing this technology, 40-60% water may be saved.
