Performance of Some Mango Hybrids

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment to evaluate the performance of 16 mango hybrids namely Hy-056, Hy-057, Hy-058, Hy-059, Hy-065, Hy-067, Hy-070, Hy-071, Hy-072, Hy-074,Hy-075, Hy-078, Hy-080, Hy-084, Hy-088 and Hy-091 was carried out at RHRS, Chapai Nawabgonj during the fruiting season of 2014 to evaluate the plant growth, fruit characteristics and yield. Among the mango hybrids, fruit weight was noted maximum in Hybrid-078 (440.00 g) while the minimum was noted in Hybrid-091 (166.67 g). The highest yield of fruit was recorded in Hy-070 (22.19 kg) while the lowest was recorded in Hy-088(1.25 kg). Hy-075 had maximum edible portion (84.85%) as against minimum (58.00 %) in Hy-091. The highest TSS (23.00 %) was recorded from Hy-058 and Hy-067 compared to minimum (15.00%) in Hy-080. At the time of harvest the highest fruit fly infestation was recorded in Hy-057 (27.15 %) while lowest was in Hy-088 (3.15 %). Among the hybrids Hy-056, Hy-057 and Hy-084 showed the highest incidence of anthracnose (50%) while the lowest was in Hy-058 (11%). Fruits of Hy-058 exhibited maximum shelf life (9-12 days) as against minimum (4-5 days) was in Hy-056, Hy-057, Hy-065 and Hy-084.

Objectives:

The present study was undertaken to investigate different physico-chemical characteristics along with growth, yield potentiality and insect-desease reaction of some mango hybrids grown in Chapai Nawabgonj.

Methodology:

The hybridization in mango was started in 1993 at Regional Horticulture Research Station, Chapai Nawabganj. Till today 116 mango hybrid plants were developed. Among them only Hy-017 has been released as BARI Aam-4 in 2003. Among them 16 promising hybrid with their respective parents were evaluated (Table 1). These sixteen hybrids were considered as the experimental treatments.

Cultural operations such as fertilization, weeding, irrigation and plant protection measurment were done as and when necessary. Quantitative characters such as fruit weight, fruit size, stone weight, stone size, TSS, edible portion and qualitative characters such as colour at ripening stage, pulp colour, peeling quality etc were recorded. Data on insect pests and diseases infestation were recorded and post harvest quality of ten mango stored under normal room temperature were also recorded. Mean data were computed and statistically analyzed.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering yield, number of fruits, single fruit weight, percent edible portion, skin colour, eating quality and total soluble solids (TSS) Hy-058 , Hy-059 , Hy-067 and Hy-070 were found superior among the 16 mango hybrids. Among the studied hybrids Hy-058 and Hy-059 had attractive skin colour couple with, promising yiedld and yield contributing characters, and post-harvest quality. So, these two mango hybrids will be used in hybridization programme in future as breeding materials.
