Effect of Row Spacing on the Yield of Three Cultivars of Foxtail Millet.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The average yield of kaon is around 0.86 t/ha in Bangladesh although the crop has a high yield potential. The main reason for such poor yield is the lack of high yielding variety. Research to date indicate that high yielding varieties should be grown with suitable agronomic practices with a view to achieving desired goal. Among the agronomic practices influencing the yield. plant spacing is important . The present paper reports the performance of three cultivars grown under five different plant spacing.

Objectives:

To identify the effect of row spacing on the yield of Foxtail millet

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jamalpur during the period from 15 February to 20 May of 1988. The soil of the experimental plot was sandy loam with pH 6.5. Three cultivars (Titas, Bogra-1 and a local variety Jamalpur local) and two method of seeding (broa dcast and line sowing) were used with four row spacing (20,25,30 and 35cm). The experiment was laid out in a split plot design with three replications. Individual plot size was 5m X 3m. The culti vars were placed in main plots and spacing were in sub-plots. Seeds were sown @ 8kg/ha. The experimental f ield was fertilized with 25, 30 and 20 kg/ha of N, P.o6 and K 2 0 as basal and the source of fertilizer for each nutrients were urea, triple super phosphate and muriate of potash respectively. One irri gation and one top dressing of urea (20 kg N/ha} were applied at 30 days after emergence (DAE). On e hand weed ing was done at 35 DAS. The crop was harvested on 24th May, 1988. Data on grain, stover yields and yield attributes were recorded .

Achievement/Findings:

Grain yield was significantly affected by method of seeding with row spacing and variety. Higher grain yield was obtained from variety Titas with row spacing of 25 em which was closely followed by the same variety with 30 em spacing. All the variety showed lower grain yield in broadcasting met hod. The higher yield in line sowing method probably be due to efficient utilization of solar radiation and nutrients. These findings are in agreement with those obtained by Dhillon and Kler (1978). Thus a higher yield of kaon could be obtained from variety Titas with 25 em row spacing.
