Potato Production in Munshigonj - Yield Gap Analysis

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was carried out in Munshigong to estimate yield and profit gap, as well as the underlying cause of this gap was examined. The recommended spacing for potato is 60 x 30 cm. while on an average spacing of 29 x 11 cm was observed in farmer's field. In NDP, farmer used 74 percent higher seed than DP and more than double dose of fertilizer. Yield of potato in NDP was 36.96 t/ha and in DP it was 40.38 t/ha. Inferior quality of seed was the main reason for this lower yield. Per hectare total variable cost was Tk. 76.796 and Tk. 63.760, and gross margin on total variable cost basis was Tk. 13.718 and Tk.35, 159 for NDP and DP, respectively. The total variable cost deflated by 9 percent and gross margin increased by 56 percent. A difference in yield between DP and NDP was 3.420 kg, and for which the gap between the gross margin is Tk. 21.441 while variable cost differs by Tk. 13,036

Objectives:

To estimate the yield and profit gap of potato production in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The study was carried out at farm levels during the rabi season of 1994-95 in purposively selected areas of Munshigonj district. which is extensively potato producing area of Bangladesh. The information on demonstration plot were collected from Munshigonj sadar and Shirajdikhan thana. The information of 28 "Demonstration plot (DP)" were collected from the b!ock supervisor of Department of Agriculture Extension. For "Non- demonstration Plot (NDP)", 30 sample farmers were randomly selected out of the total potato growers, who cultivated diamant variety.The data were collected using well structured interview schedule. Personal interview was conducted by the researcher and trained enumerator. The collected data were edited, summarized and analyzed to meet the objectives of the study. Descriptive statistics such as average, percentages, and ratios were determined. Moreover, t-test was applied to test the differences between means wherever it was necessary.

Achievement/Findings:

It appeared from the preceding discussion that a gap of yield,return and margin exists between demonstration and non demonstration plot. One of the major reason behind the low yield was shortage of quality seed. Price of quality seed was also high. It is, therefore, necessary to produce sufficient quality seeds locally and to arrange distribution in time. Farmers should be trained on quality seed production and preservation technology. Quality seed production in local area would ensure timely availability of seed and reduce price. Research result shows that better performance can be achieved with less but efficient use of fertilizers. For this, extension work must be strengthened by imparting short term training programme for bot the extension workers and farmers
