The present study was carried out in Tangail and Jessore districts to study the yield and benefit gap under different production-costs situation of mustard crop. The production situations were: production of mustard under demonstration plot with SS-75 variety (DP/SS-75), under non-demonstration plot with SS-75 variety (NDP/ Tori-7). The cost situations were: cost in above situations of production considering both full and cash-costs. Data for the study were collected during September 1993 to April 1994. Results of the study in both the districts revealed that yield gap between DP/SS-75 and NDP/SS-75, DP/SS-75 and NDP/Tori-7 and NDP/SS-75 and NDP/Tori-7 were 142 kg (12%), 339 kg (21%) and 197 kg (35%) per hectare, respectively. The benefit gap on cash-cost basis between DP/SS-75 and NDP/SS-75, DP/SS-75 and NDP/Tori-7 and NDP/SS-75 and NDP/Tori-7 were Tk 865 (6%), Tk 3095 (27%) and Tk 2230 (20%) per hectare, respectively. The benefit gap op full-cost basis between DP/SS-75 and NDP/SS-75, DP/SS-75 and NDP/Tori-7 were Tk 1310 (23%), Tk 704 (10%) and Tk 604 (10%) per hectare, respectively. However, this apparent yield and economic gap can be minimized at farm level by applying the procedure followed in DP/SS-75 situation.

To study the yield and benefit gap under different production situations.

The study was carried out purposively in Tangail and Jessore districts. To estimate the gap of yield and return of mustard under different situations, a number of demonstration plots of HYV mustard with free seed under Crop Diversification Programme (CDP) were selected purposively. For comparison, mustard under farmer's condition using high yielding and local variety were surveyed in the same or nearby location. In Tangail, 30 demonstration plots with SS-75 variety under farmers' condition (NDP/SS-75) and another 30 non-demonstration plots with Tori-7 variety under farmers' condition (NDPlTori -7) were selected at random for the study. In Jessore, 22 demonstration plots with Tori-7 variety under farmers' situation was selected at random. However, a total of 52 of DP-SS 75 plots, 60 of (NDP/SS-75 and 60 of NDP Tori -7 were selected. Data for the study were collected during September 1993 to April 1994 through survey method by utilizing pre-tested questionnaires. The yield and benefit gap of mustard were made between demonstration plots (DP) and non-demonstration (NDP) plots, and within non-demonstration plots (NDP) under different situations of mustard production. The gap under different situations of production can be expressed as: Gap I: Difference between the yields obtained from DP/SS-75 and (NDP/SS-75. Gap II: Difference between the yields obtained from DP/SS-75 and (NDP/Tori-7. Gap III: Difference between the yields obtained from NDP/SS-75 and (NDP/Tori-7. Gap IV: Difference between the economic benefit (gross margin) obtained from DP/SS-75 and (NDP/SS-75 on cash-cost basis. Gap V: Difference between the economic benefit obtained from DP/SS-75 and NDPlTori-7 on cash-cost basis. Gap VI: Difference between the economic benefit obtained from NDP/SS-75 and NDP/Tori-7 on cash-cost basis. Gap VII: Difference between the economic benefit obtained from DP/SS-75 and NDP/SS-75 on full-cost basis. Gap VIII: Difference between the economic benefits obtained from DP/SS-75 and NDP/Tori-7 on full- cost basis. Gap IX: Difference between the economic benefits obtained from NDP/SS-75 and NDP/Tori-7 on full-cost basis. These gaps of yields and economic benefits were measured by tabular method of analysis using percentage term. The observed difference in the mean levels of yield between DP/SS-75 and NDP/SS -75, DP/SS-75 and NDP/Tori-7, and NDP/SS-75 and NDP/Tori-7 were further tested by using t-statistics,

The absolute and relative yield as well as benefit gap between HYV and local variety of mustard were calculated. Based on the average results of both the districts, yield gap in the absolute and relative term between DP (SS-75) and NDP (SS-75), DP (SS-75), DP (SS-75) and NDP (Tori-7) and NDP (SS-75) and NDP (Tori-7) was positive. The yield and cost situation was such that gap in economic benefit in all the above situations was also found positive on cash cost basis. But on full cost basis, both absolute and relative gap in the situation of NDP (SS-75) and NDP (Tori-7) was negative but in the other two situations, it was positive. On cash cost basis, relative benefit gap was higher than relative yield gap in the situation of DP (SS-75) and NDP (Tori-7). But on full cost basis, it was higher in the situation of DP (SS-75) and NDP (SS-75). In the other situations, it was lower. This indicates that the farmers who intend to market their products would prefer DP (SS-75) practices instead of farmers' practices of producing Tori-7 variety.
