Cost-benefit Analysis of Cultivating Potato Through Zero Tillage Method

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was undertaken in Patuakhali to assess the cost and return of cultivating potato through zero tillage method Farmers' attitudes and reasons for non adoption were the other aspects that were looked into. The average yield of potato through adoption of this method was 15.68 ton/ha which brought about a gross return of Tk. 78,400/ha. The gross margin on full cost basis was Tk 32,606/ha, while the net return was Tk 30,106. Inadequate supply of quality seed, shortage of cash money, high price of inputs (fertilizers, insecticides) etc. were some of the difficulties encountered by the farmers. Farmers also had difficulty in controlling rodents which frequently attacked the potato field. The above mentioned reasons also worked as a detrimental factors towards implementation of the system. In spite of low yield and high utilization of cash money potato cultivation through this method was found to be profitable.

Objectives:

The present study on zero tillage method was undertaken for: (i) ascertaining cost and return, (ii) assessing farmers attitude and (iii) identifying the reasons for non-adaptation.

Methodology:

Seven villages of Sadar thana under Patuakhali district were selected purposively for collection of data. The underlying criteria for choosing the above area was that this technique was initiated in FSR site of BARI located in those villages. Initially, in consultation with Block Supervisor of the Department of Agricultural Extension a list of farmers who adopted zero tillage method was prepared. A total of 35 sample farmers were selected randomly from the list so prepared. In order to assess the cost-return the user farmers were interviewed directly while for ascertaining the reasons for non adaptation group interview was conducted among the non users. Data for this study was collected during the rabi season. 1993-94. The data so collected were compiled, summarized and presented in tabular form using averages, ratios, percentages etc. to satisfy the research objectives.

In the light of the above discussion, the following conclusions can be drawn and certain recommendations can be put forward. Cost of potato production was found to be high mainly due to the high cost of seed which accounts for 35 % of the total investment. Average gross margin, net return, BCR etc. indicate that potato under zero tillage method was profitable, though the yield in the reporting year was comparatively low. Major reasons behind the low yield may be low quality seed, early harvest due to the attack of rodent etc. Majority of the farmers showed eagerness to expand the areas with this new technology in the coming year. To overcome the problem of quality seed and its high price, it is essential to ensure availability of quality seed in proper time with reasonable price through both BADC and private traders. And for this, cold storage facilities in the locality need to be developed. Cultivation cost of potato is very high. Without institutional credit support, it is difficult for the poor farmers to expand area under potato cultivation. It is, therefore, necessary to provide credit with easy terms and condition. Fertilizers and pesticides should be provided at a reasonable price. Research should be geared up for developing appropriate technique for controlling the rodent. For expansion of area, motivation and campaign must be strengthen.
