Economics of Guava Cultivation: an Empirical Analysis in Selected Areas of BARIsal District

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was undertaken to investigate the effect or various inputs used and to estimate the resource use efficiency in the production of guava . Farm level primary data collected by random sampling techniques were used for this study . The investigation was based on a sample survey of randomly selected 60 guava growers under Barisal district. Tabular technique, statistical test (t-test) as well as some functional input output analyses were used to analyze and interpret the data. The results of the study indicated that the return of guava was positively related with the inputs used namely manure. TSP. gypsum and insect icides. The findings also reveal that guava growers were not efficient in term s of resource allocation. The identified factors responsible for increased production of guava were using of cowdung, ash, TSP, MP, insecticides and irrigation.

Objectives:

To examine farmers' resource use efficiency and productivity of guava at farm level.

Methodology:

The study was conducted in two villages namely Adamkathi under Swarupkathi Upazilla and Kuriana under Jhalokati Sadar where farmers extensively produced guava. The list of guava growers were collected from Upazilla Agriculture Office. A total of 60 guava growers were randomly selected taking 30 from each locations. The rationale behind the selection of these particular areas lies in the fact that guava is widely and commercially cultivated in these areas. Data were collected by interviewing the individual respondent with a pre-deigned survey schedule. Information was collected during June to August 2002. Both tabular and functional analysis were done to evaluate economic performance of guava growing farms. To determine the contribution of variable inputs to the production of guava, the following Cobb Douglas production function was used. The inputs of family labour, hired labour, seeds, cowdung, ash, oilcake, urea, TSP, MP, Gypsum, insecticides and irrigation were considered as the explanatory variable for the guava in the production function analysis. The other inputs like management, farm size, soil condition, time of sowing and rental value of land which might affect the farm income substantially were excluded from the model.

Achievement/Findings:

In all areas, the total production cost was Tk 34122/ha which was Tk.35026/ha in Swarupkathi and Tk . 33220/ha in Jhalokathi . Out of total cost of guava production, variable cost covered 45.73% and the fixed cost 29.19%. The variable cost was higher in Jhalokati Tk.( 16053/ha) followed by Swarupkathi (Tk . l5159/ha) . The average yield was about 20t/ha which was higher than that of national average of 5.26 t/ha. The total gross return was Tk. I09816/ha where gross margin was Tk.9421 0/ha which was higher in Swarupkathi (Tk.l 01441 /ha) compared to Jhalokathi (Tk.87372/ha). Net return was also higher in Swarupkathi (Tk. 8 1574/ha) compared to Jhalokathi (Tk.70205/ha). Irrespective of areas, the benefit cost ratio (undidcounted) was 3.11 while 3.32 was in Swarupkati and 3.11 in Jhalokati. The findings revealed that guava growers were not efficient in terms of resource allocation. The identified factors responsible for increased production of guava were using of cowdung, ash, TSP, MP, insecticides and irrigation.
