Homestead Plantation and Household Fuel Situation in Non-saline Tidal Floodplain of Patuakhali District

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An attempt was made to understand the existing homestaed plantation systems and to assess the household fuel situation in a non-saline tidally flood area of Patuaskhali district. Results revealed that almost every homestead contained a number of multipurpose trees among which Areca catechu, Mangifera indica, Cocos nucifera, phoenix sylvestris, Artocarpus heteroplyllus, Samanea saman and Albiziz procera were prominent. Among different types of fuel materials used, cowdung, fuelwood, branches and leaves of trees and crop residues were most common. The contribution of cowdung as fuel was high in poor farm categories. Shortage of household fuel was common irrespective of farm size, but it was more acute in the small farms. The collection of different fuel materials like cowdung, branches of trees and leaves were found to be common practice to cover fuel shortage of small farms. However, limited space, lack of technical know how and good seedlings with poultry rearing were found to be major constraints for planting trees in homestead.

Objectives:

To identify existing distribution of plant species at homestead: to know pattern and situation of household fuel use and to find constraints and potentials of homestead plantations.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at the Filrming Systems Research (FSR) site Lebukhali. Patuakhali under On Farm Research Division of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute representing the non-saline Ganges Tidal Floodplain Soils ( AEZ 13) of Bangladesh. The FSR site consists of three villages having 1932 households, with a total population of 11,630. Initially, a list of all farmers from three villages was prepared and grouped into 5 classes viz, landless ( <0.2 ha), marginal (0.20-0.50 ha) , small (0.51 - 1 .00 ha), medium ( 1.01 - 2.00 ha) and large ( < 2.00 ha) farmers according to size of own land holdings. A sample of sixty households , 12 from each farm category were selected randomly from the list of all farmers. All kinds of information were collected in detail from both male and female heads of the household with the help of an interview schedule during March-April, 1988. The distribution of different plant species on the homestead was surveyed physically. Tabular methods of analysis was intensively used to analyze the data.
