Effect of Different Seed Grades and Planting Methods on the Yield of Black Gram (mashkalai)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Nine seed grades on the basis of size and colour of the same variety and two methods of planting were included in the experiment to observe their effect on the growth and yield of Mash Vigna mungo ( L.) Hepper, Among the seed grades studied, Black Large seeds (well mature and large ones) gave significantly highest yields of both grain and hay. Large seeds after Black Large came out to be better than any of the remaining seed grades. Brown Small seeds (less mature and small ones) produced the lowest yield. irrespective of seed grades, line sowing produced the higher seed and hay yields than broadcasting,

Objectives:

To observe the effect on the growth and yield of Mash Vigna mungo ( L.) Hepper,

Methodology:

The experimental material (Mash seed) had the characteristics of diffeiences in colour and size although multiplied from the same variety. The colour variation Was evidently assumed -due to differential stage of maturity of 'pods at harvest. 'Brown' and 'Black' were two prominent colour groups separated by visua l ob.ervation. The seed lot was graded into two sizes by pass- ing through a mesh ( 8 mesh I sq. in. ), Thus, on the basis of size and colour, "he following grades Were selected for the study : 1) Unassortcd seeds 2) Black seed, 3) Brown seed s 4) Large sec d 5) Small seeds 6) Black Large seeds 7) Black Small seeds 8) Brown Large seeds 9) Brown Small seeds. The seeds Were sown in tow met hods of planting, namely, line sowing and broadcasting. Thus, the grades and methods constituted 18 treatment combinations. Randomized Block Design was adopted for experimentation. Unit plot size was 0.002 ha. The basic experiment, comprised of 18 treatment combination , was replicated 4 times. Treatment combinations Were randomly assigned on unit p lots. On the basis of information on per cent germination, per cent purity, 1000- seed weight etc . the density of planting' was kept approximately constant to each unit plot. Line to line spacing was kept 30.48 cm.. With adjusted seed rates, the seeds Were sown on 30 October 1977. The crop Was not irrigated but fertilized wi.h 35-3 :-24 k:;fha of N, P and K respectively and harvested on 21 February 1978.
