Effect of Spacing on Grain Yield and Yield Attributes of Pop Corn

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A 2-year field experiment was carried out with three row spacing and four plant spacing of pop corn to find out the optimum spacing for getting maximum grain yield. The 60 cm row to row spacing gave the highest grain yield for both the year and it was identical with 75 cm spacing. The highest gain yield was found from 25 cm plant to plant spacing and it was at par with 30 cm and 20 cm for 1989 and 30 cm for 1990, respectively. The 60 cm X 25 cm spacing gave the highest yield for both the year followed by 75 cm X 20 cm and 45 cm X 30 cm.

Objectives:

1. To find out the optimum spacing of pop corn.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Hathazari, Chittagong that is situated at 91°47'30" east longitude and 20°30' north latitude in the grey piedmont soils under series sylok during Kharif 1989 and 1990 seasons. The soil texture was silty clay loam having pH 5.5 and O.M. 0.90% with trace amount of sulphur and zinc . Three row spacing (45, 60 and 75 cm) with four plant spacing ( 15, 20, 25 and 30 cm) were included in the study. The experiment was laid in randomized complete block design with four replications. The size of the unit plot was 5m x 4m. The variety Khaibhutta was used in the study. Fertilizers in the form of urea, triple superphosphate, muriate of potash, zinc sulphate and gypsum were applied at the rate of 100 kg N, 60 kg P₂0_5, 40 kg K₂0 20 kg Zn and 200 kg S ha, respectively. One third of urea and all other fertilizers were applied during final land preparation and the remaining urea was side dressed in two equal splits at 33 days and 55 days after sowing for both the years. After well pulverization of land, the seeds were sown on 27 February, 1989 and 7 March, 1990. One flood and another furrow irrigation were given on 28 days and 50 days after sowing for both the years. Weeding, thinning, earthling up and all other operations were done as per requirements. The crop was harvested on 110 days after sowing. Yield parameters data were collected from 10 randomly selected plants in each plot. Data on grain and stover yields were recorded from entire plot leaving two boarder rows. The grain yield was adjusted at 14% moisture. The data were analysed statistically and mean data were adjudged by least significant difference (LSD) test .
