Study on the Mixed Cropping of Jute and Amaranth at Varying Seeding Ratios

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Different combinations of jute (Corchorus olitorious) and Amaranth ( Amaranthus lividus ) were compared to corresponding mono-crop in an experiment conducted at the Multi-locatian Test (MLT) site of Phulpur Thana under Mymensing District during the Kharif season of 1991. The treatment consists of mono-culture jute; mono-culture Amaranth and three jute + Amaranth mixed cropping as 100%+25%; 100%+ 50% and 75%+ 50% respectively. Mono-culture jute and Amaranth gave the highest yield but maximum monetary return resulted from their mixtures. The most compatible ratios for jute and Amaranth combination was found to be 75 and 50.

Objectives:

To compare the performance of jute and amaranth grown as mono-crop and mixed crops at varying seeding ratios at farmers field.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted during the kharif season (April-September) of 1991 at the MLT site of Phulpur under Mymensingh district. The treatments consisted of combinations of jute and amaranth (100:25; 100:50 and 75:50) and mono-culture of the two crops. The design was randomized complete block with four replications . The unit plot size was 10m x 5m. The seed rate of jute and amaranth culture was 8 and 1 kg/ha. The jute cultivar, 0-9897 and local variety of data were used as test crops. The seeds were sown on 20th April, 1991. A 10 t/ ha mixture of cowdung and 4 t/ha of ash were applied at the time of final land preparation and 40 kg/ha nitrogen was was applied from which 20 kg as basal and the rest 20 kg was top dressed at 60 days after seeding . The plots were weeded twice. Mono-culture and inter-crops were harvested from an area of 3m x 2m. To find the advantage of yield in mixed cropping land equivalent ratio (LER) method was used.

Achievement/Findings:

The highest fibre yield ( 1.8 t/ ha ) was obtained from jute sole crop followed by 75% jute+50% amaranth. The lowest yield ( 1.4 t/ha ) was produced by 100% jute -!- 50% amaranth. Yield of sole jute was significantly higher than the other treatments. The highest fibre yield produced by the jute sole crop might be due to the maximum number of plant populations/m² and the tallest plants. The yield of jute decreased when mixed cropped with amaranth. This could be because of higher competition for nutrients and other related grovvth factors between jute and amaranth. From the result it is also revealed that the effect of mixed crop treatments were significant on plant population and yield of amaranth. The sole crop of amaranth gave the highest yield ( 8.62 t/ha ) followed by 100% jute + 50% amaranth and 75% jute +50% amaranth respectively. Due to higher population per unit area in mixed cultures, the inter and intracrop competition increased and resulted in lower yield. When the LER is considered, it is observed that combinations having 75% jute +50% amaranth and 100% jute + 50% amaranth had a 39% and 33% increase over the mono-culture. it is seen that jute alone gave a net return of Taka 6120 .00 ( the current local market price of the product and by-product was considered). But when it was mixed (75%+50%),the net return was Taka 17680.00. Again amaranth gave lower net return than the other crop combinations when grown alone. The highest benefit-cost ratio (2 .47) was given by the seed ratios of 75% jute and 50% amaranth.
