Growth and Yield of Maize as Affected by Time and Percentage of Detasseling

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment on hybrid maize (Var. BHM 9) was carried out at the research field of Plant Physiology Division, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur during rabi season 2013-14 to determine the effect of timing and intensity of detasseling in relation to growth and grain yield of maize. The experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design with three replications. There were five treatments such as T₁- Control, T₂-33% detasseling at the 50% silking, T₃- 50% detasseling at 50% silking T₄- 33% detasseling at the 100% silking and T₅-50% detasseling at the 100% silking used as treatment variables. Dry matter distribution in different parts of the plant showed similar trend in all the treatment and total dry matter accumulation was slightly higher in the control treatment than that of detasseled treatment. Cob growth rate was observed slightly higher in 50% detasseling at 100% silking stage. Yield and yield components did not vary significantly among the treatment. Maximum grain yield was obtained from control treatment which was at par with that of 50% detasseling at 100% silking stage. Moreover, detasseling treatment gave extra benefit form fodder yield.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the research field of Plant Physiology Division, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur during rabi season 2013-14. The experimental site is located at 23⁰45′ N latitude and 90⁰22′ E longitude. The area belongs to Madhupur Tracts of Bangladesh. The experiment was conducted in randomized complete block design with three replications. There were five treatments such as T₁- Control, T₂-33% detasseling at the 50% silking, T₃- 50% detasseling at 50% silking T₄- 33% detasseling at the 100% silking and T₅-50% detasseling at the 100% silking used as treatment variables. The plot size was 4.2m×3m. Seeds (BARI hybrid maize 9) were sown on 25 November 2013 and spacing was 60cm×20cm. Fertilizers were applied at the rate of 250-55-100-90 Kg/ha N, P, K and S as area, triple super phosphate (TSP), muriate of potash (MOP) and gypsum. One third of N and whole amount of TSP, MOP and gypsum were applied as basal. Remaining 2/3 N was top dressed at 40 and 75 days after sowing. Irrigation was given as when required to maintain adequate soil moisture. Other intercultural operations were done for maintaining proper crop growth. Detasseling were imposed as per treatment and detasseled plots were covered with nylon mosquito net to protect from pollination outside the plot. Data were taken on dry matter partitioning, fresh weight of tassel as fodder, yield and yield components at harvest. Collected data were analyzed statistically.

From this study it can be concluded that 50% detasseling could be done at 100% silking stage without affecting growth and grain yield as well as getting extra benefit from fodder yield.
