The experiment was carried out at Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear of Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh, during the period from February to May 2006 to observe the effect of gamma radiation on some important morphological features and yield of tomato genotypes. Gamma irradiation 200 Gy and six tomato genotypes viz., J-5, CLN-2026, CLN-2366, CLN-2413, CLN-2418 and CLN-2443 were included in this study. Effect of genotypes and 200 Gy dose of gamma radiation had significant effect on seed germination percentage, survival percentage, height of seedling, fresh weight of seedling, plant height, number of branch/plant, number of fruit/plant and yield (t/ha). The maximum height of seedling (18.40 cm) and fresh weight of seedling (5.17g) were found in CLN-2366 and CLN-2413 with control. J-5 genotype showed maximum plant height and number of branch (71.00 and 10.67) with control. CLN-2026 genotype showed maximum number of fruit and total fruit weight/plant (50.00 and 839.01 g) with 200 Gy gamma iradiation. CLN-2026 produced the highest yield (44.04 t/ha) with 200 Gy gamma radiation while J-5 produced the lowest yield (9.22 t/ha) with control. CLN-2026 with 200 Gy gamma radiation was the best yielder among the genotypes.

To observe the effect of gamma ray irradiation on germination, morphological, yield attributes and yield of tomato genotypes.

The experiment was carried out with six tomato genotypes at the experimental plot of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear of Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh, during the period from February to May 2006. Gamma irradiation of 200 Gy and six tomato genotypes viz., J-5, CLN-2026, CLN-2366, CLN-2413, CLN-2418 and CLN-2443 were included in this study. The experiment was carried out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Cow dung, urea, TSP and MP were applied at the rate of 10 t ha-1, 226 kg ha-1, 222 kg ha-1 and 250 kg ha-1 respectively. Before sowing the seeds an expert technicial at BINA applied 200 grey gamma radiation on seeds. Unit plot size was 4m × 3m. Thirty days old seedling of tomato genotypes were transplanted in the experimental plot in the afternoon of 2 March, 2006. Immediately after transplanting the seedlings were properly watered.    Data on germination, morpho-physiological attributes and yield were recorded.  Analysis of variance was done following randomized complete block design with the help of computer package MSTAT-C (Russell, 1986). The mean difference among the treatment was tested with Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).

Effect of genotypes and 200 Gy dose of gamma radiation had significant effect on seed germination percentage, survival percentage, height of seedling, fresh weight of seedling, plant height, number of branch/plant, number of fruit/plant and yield (t/ha) of tomato genotypes. Interaction of genotypes and gamma radiation also had significant effect on most of the above mentioned attributes. CLN-2366 genotype showed maximum germination and survival percentage (93.67 and 90.33 respectively) with control and CLN-2418 showed the lowest germination and survival percentage (81.67 and 75.67 respectively) with 200 Gy gamma irradiation. The maximum height of seedling (18.40 cm) and fresh weight of seedling (5.17g) were found in CLN-2366 and CLN-2413 with control.
