Factors Related to the Adoption of Selected Fisheries Management Practices by the Fish Farmers

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Maintenance of proper physical conditions of the pond, supply of supplementary feeding and use of fertilizer were adopted by 44, 32 and 28 percent of the respondents, respectively. A positive relationship was found between the use of fertilizer in the pond and farm size, income, organizational participation and cosmopolite ness of the fish farmers. There was also a positively significant relationship between organizational participation of the respond dents and maintenance of proper physical condition of the pond. Completeness of the fish farmers had significant effect in the use of supplementary feeding in the ponds. The Source of information used by the fish farmers according to rank order were radio, news paper, Agri-varsity extension project, relatives and friends and leaflets and posters. Problems faced by the fish farmers according to rank order were lack of fund for re excavation of pond, no n- availability of improved fish varieties lack; of scientific knowledge and information, inadequate co-operation and supervision of the field workers of the fisheries department, attack of predators and thieves, joint ownership, difficulties in obtaining credit from the bank and non-availability of fertilizer, respectively.

Objectives:

1) To determine the extent of use of the selected and recommended fisheries management practices in raising fishes by the people of the selected area ;

2) To determine the different sources of information that are usually used by the fish farmers for receiving scientific information in connection with fish culture

3) To explore the relationships of the selected characteristics of the fish farmer with the extent of use of seleted recommended improved fisheries management practices; and

4) To identify the different problems that are faced by the fish farmers for adopting selected fisheries management practices.

Methodology:

Fish farmers of Boyra, Sutiakhali and Daribabhkhali of Kotwali Thana under Mymensingh District constituted the population of this study. There were 102 ponds in this three villages and the owner of tbese ponds were called fish farmers. However, data for this study were collected from 50 randomly selected fish farmers. Data were collected per- sonally, using interview-schedule during April 22 to May 9, 1983. The extent of use of fisheries management practices constituted the only dependent variable in this study. Six char- acteristics of the fish farmers such as age, education, farm size, income, organizational participation and cosmopoliteness were the independent variables. Core- lation test was used to examine the relationships of the selected characteristics of the fish farmers with the extent of use of selected management practices which were (a) application of fertilizer (b) Maintenance of proper physical conditions of pond and (c) supply of supplementary food.
