Binamasur-1, an Induced High Yielding Lentil Mutant Variety

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A high yielding variety was developed with datura seed extract on lentil cultivar, Pabna local. Out of 527 M. plants, three produced black coated seeds in a few pods, the others were gray coated seeds on the same plant. Plants were selected up to M4 generations for black seed coat colour establishment. Evaluation of the mutant ML-432 was done at farmers' conditions at different agroecological zones of Bangladesh. This promising mutant showed higher yield with black coated seed, bushy, erect and much branched plant, tolerant to rust and blight diseases. The mutant line ML-432 has been released as a commercial cultivar, Binamasur-1 in 2001.

Objectives:

To develop a high yielding lentil variety with black coat colour genetic marker as well as disease resistant.

Methodology:

Freshly prepared seed extracts of datura (Datura metel) was applied for 10 hours on germinating seeds of Pabna local in petridish in 1988. Prior to such treatment, the seeds were soaked in water overnight until the epicotyl gone started showing slight curvature and unfolding of the cotyledons. The treated seeds after overnight soaking in water were individually seeded in small polythene bags containing manured soil. Three weeks old seedlings were then transplanted in the field. The MI plants were grown and harvested individually. Out of 527 M, plants, three produced black coated seeds in a few pods, the others bore gray coated seeds on the same plant. Selections were made up to M4 generations for true breeding type with black seed coat colour. Plant - progeny rows were grown in the following generations with normal spacing and cultural practices. During these years selections were practised on the basis of overall plant vigour and seed yield per plant with black seed coat colour character. Observation, preliminary, advanced and zonal yield trial were conducted during 1991-92, 1992-93, 1994-95 and 1995-96, respectively. Randomized complete block design with three replications was followed in advanced and zonal yield trial. Unit plot size was 5m x 4m. Based on the yield performance of the previous years, two promising mutants, ML-432 and ML-22 were put into on-farm trials at different locations of the country in collaboration with the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) during 1996-97 and 1997 -98. Unit plot size was 10m x 5m in each location. The mutant ML-432 was proposed as BINAMASUR- 1 to National Seed Board for variety registration. Data on some important traits and seed yield/plot were recorded. Plot yield data were converted into kilogram per hectare. Mean differences of different parameters including seed yield were tested by Duncan's Multiple Range Test.

Achievement/Findings:

The result of on-farm trials is presented. The mutant ML-432 produced the highest seed yield in all the locations compared to the check variety. This mutant also showed tolerance to diseases like rust and blight under field conditions. Induced mutations have been successfully utilized in improving grain legume varieties in this country.
