Use of Communication Sources by the Irri Rice Growers

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

There is a general consensus that diffusion of innovations in a social system is highly influenced by the communication process. The present study was undertaken to ascertain the extent of use of information sources by (a) the IRRI rice farmers in the season, 1569, and (b) the primary cooperative societies. One hundred farmers were selected randomly from 133 deep tube weIls of the Thakurgoan Thana Cooperative Tube Well Project for data collection. The study revealed that personal sources of information were used relatively to a greater extent than the impersonal ones. It also revealed that the primary cooperative societies were differently exposed to communication media, the maximum extent being expressed by 14'33 as tube well exposure index and the minimum being 4.75. A good number of factors were responsible for the differentiaI extent of use of the sources. These factors might be grouped into situational, social, and political in nature.

To determine the extent of use of information sources by the IRRI rice growers in the aus season, 1969 ; and to determine the extent of use of information sources by the primary cooperative societies.

Methodology:

The Thakurgaon Thana Cooperative Tube Well Project of the Bangladesh Water Development Board was the universe for data collection. There were 133 deep tube wells in the project area. There was a primary cooperative society under each tube well area. Extension work as well as making available supplies, services and marketing facilities for the farmers were being carried out by this institution. Twenty tube wells were selected by random method. Selection of respondents for collecting evidence was confined to IRRI rice growers of the aus season, 1969. They were also selected randomly following the Kendal and Babington- Smith Table. Personal interview Schedule was used as a data gathering instrument. A house to house survey was made for data collection. The number of farmers interviewed was 100.

Achievement/Findings:

The social factor is related mainly on the composition of the sample interviewed. In four tube wells a good number of respondents belonged to the schedule caste, Palia, an aboriginal of the locality and in two tube wells they formed the majority. It was rather interesting to note that in general societies populated by Palias tended to score relatively less TEl than those where there were no Palias. The reason may be that besides religion, they have a different language and culture, a different attitude, feeling, and outlook towards life. In short, their social system is quite different. The long continued mass upsurge in 1969 throughout the country might have an indirect effect on the cooperative societies for their being exposed to communication media differently. During the movement a good number of tube wells went out of order in the aus season, 1969 which could not be repaired immediately. As a result standing IRRI rice suffered much for want of irrigation. Almost a total failure of the crop occurred in three tube wells. IRRI rice growers of the badly affected tube wells were, there- fore, less interested to use information sources. Village cliques were prominent in some of the cooperative societies. IRRI rice seemed to have been grown in these tube wells to a relatively less extent. It was observed that these tube wells, in general, tended to have less TEl than others.
