Collection and Evaluation of Jara Lemon (citrus Medica) Germplasm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Six germplasm of Jara lemon such as CM Akb-001, CM Akb-002, CM Akb-003, CM Akb-004, CM Akb-005 and CM Akb-006 were evaluated at the RARS, Akbarpur, during 2013-14. The growth performance of Jara lemon germplasm was satisfactory and performed a variation. Different fruit characters of six Jara lemon germplasm exhibited a wide variation among them, the heaviest (870.0 g) fruits were obtained from CM Akb-001 followed by CM Akb-003 (855.0 g) and CM Akb-002 (460.0 g) while the lightest (100.0 g) in CM Akb-006. Fruit length ranged from 7.50 cm (CM Akb-006) to 17.50 (CM Akb-001) cm and fruit breadth from 4.80 cm (CM Akb-006) to 13.50 cm (CM Akb-001). The thicker (2.30cm) rind was also obtained from CM Akb-001 and the thinner rind was 0.50 cm in CM Akb-006. Number of seed was noted the lowest (36) in CM Akb-001 and the highest (93) in CM Akb-003. Pulp diameter was recorded the highest (5.90cm) in CM Akb-004 and the lowest (3.60 cm) in CM Akb-006. Weight of seed ranged from 5.40 (CM Akb-001) to 18.30 g (CM Akb-003). Number of fruits per plant was noted the highest (45.0) in CM Akb-006 and the lowest (7.0) in CM Akb-001.

Objectives:

To evaluate, characterized and documented the jara lemon germplasm for future utilization
To select superior jara lemon germplam in respect to yield and fruit quality for developing as varieties

Methodology:

The study was conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS), Akbarpur, Moulvibazar during 2013-14. Six germplasm of Jara lemon such as CM Akb-001, CM Akb-002, CM Akb-003, CM Akb-004, CM Akb-005 and CM Akb-006 were selected through the Citrus Fruit Show of 2003 held at RARS, Akbarpur, Moulvibazar. The air-layering of the selected germplasm were collected and planted in a single row system accommodating 5 plants in each row giving a spacing of 4 × 4 m². All the plants of Jara lemon were in fruiting stage. The plants were fertilized with cowdung (10 kg), urea (200 g), TSP (200 g), MoP (200 g), gypsum (100g) , zinc (4 g) and boron (4 g) in two equal installments one at the onset of rains and another at the end of rainy season. Weeding, irrigation and other management practices were done as and when necessary. Fruits were harvested at mature stage and analyzed in the laboratory. Data were taken on plant height (m), base girth (cm), plant spreading (cm), number of fruit/plant, fruit weight (gm), fruit length (cm), fruit diameter (cm), number of segment/fruits, rind thickness (cm), pulp diameter (cm), seeds/fruit, juice (%),nipple pore, skin collar, surface texture, pulp colour and core position were recorded as per IPGRI descriptors. The date were analyzed by MSTAT-C programme for interpretation.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering fruit size, rind thickness, yield and quality of fruits the line CM Akb-001 was found promising and might be conserved for future utilization as well as recommended as new variety of Jara lemon.
