In the present study, the accumulation of Co (II) from aqueous systems by locally growing species of fruiting bodies of macro-fungi (dead edible mushrooms) was investigated. The preliminary screening of the mushroom species was carried out on the basis of quantitative determination of maximum metal (Co (II) uptake potential using Langmuir isotherm. The maximum metal uptake was found to be 0.063mmol/hm for Volvariella Valvacea respectively. Volvariella Valvacea was selected for further Co (II) uptake study. The influence of pH on Co (II) accumulation was investigated and it was found that there was a pH effect on the Co (II) uptake the range of pH 5.0 - 8.0.

To evaluate the metal removal potential of locally growing species of fruiting bodies of macrofungi V. valvacea.

Co (II) was determined at 240.7nm oxidizing air acetylene flame by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (Perkin Elmer, SOB). Edible mushrooms were collected during the month of May to July from Rural Development center (RDC), I I T. Kharagpur. The fruiting bodies were detached from the paddy straw, washed in water and sun dried for two days before use. Bio-sorbent was prepared from the mushrooms by pulverizing the fruiting bodies. The different geometric mean sizes (GMs) of particles (l50µm-300µm) were collected for adsorption study. The particles were then washed with water to remove any foreign material adhered to its surfaces and dried at a temperature not exceeding 40°C. All chemicals used were of analytical grade. Metal bearing solutions were prepared by dissolving either their nitrates (cobalt nitrates (Co (NO3)2, 4H20) as per standard methods. The metal estimation was carried out by using AA-670, Atomic Adsorption! Flame Emission Spectrophotometer. ClassicaIIy bio-sorption experiments were carried out at room temperature in batches as follows: 175 mg fungal particles (bio- sorbent) were assed to 59 ml solution containing 0.5-4 mg/L of metal for equilibrium sorption experiment. The bottles were agitated on a horizontal type-shaking instrument (S. c. Dey and Co., India) at 120 rpm until no more metal was removed from solution (4.5h). For the sorption kinetic studies, initial Co (II) concentrations were in the range of 0.5mgll to 4mg/l the bottles were removed from the agitating system at predetermined time intervals and the supernatant was analyzed for residual metal concentration. For quantifying the exchangeable ions kinetic study for Co (II) removal was conducted at different time intervals. The effect of pH of the suspending medium on sorption of metals were measured along with Co (II) suspending medium on sorption of metals were studied by adjusting the solution pH with 0.1 N HCl or 0.1N NaOH in the range of pH 3 to pH 9 for Co (II). Column study was carried out using copper spiked distilled water. A 1.2 cm ID glass column was filled up to a depth of 30 cm with water was passed through the column till the colour was fed with Co (II) solution of 4mg/l adjusted to pH 7. A constant flow rate was maintained at 8ml/min (2.65m3/ m3.h) and the samples of influent and effluent were collected periodically and analyzed for Co (II).

Volvariella Valvacea was selected for further Co (II) uptake study. The influence of pH on Co (II) accumulation was investigated and it was found that there was a pH effect on the Co (II) uptake the range of pH 5.0 - 8.0. From the above discussion for an effluent concentration of 4mg/1 (i.e. Indian standard for disposal of Co (II) into Inland surface waters), breakthrough was reached at 4.38h. About 2.18 liter of Co (II) solution could thus be treated with 109 bio-sorbent that is slightly higher than the batch sorption capacity (6.24mg/g) with 150-300µm-particle size.
